Product Review: Improves Lifestyle of Disabled or Handicapped Person

When a close family member was confined to a wheelchair after a stroke, the Spil-Pruf urinal improved his lifestyle immeasurably. The Spil-Pruf was discreet, easy to handle, and could be used anywhere without any spilling. The Spil-Pruf never leaked, even when held upside down, unless it was filled beyond the approximately one-third capacity marked on the side of the container.
Recently I purchased two additional Spil-Pruf urinals for the family member, and noticed that the color had changed from cyan blue to navy blue. Unfortunately, the product design has been slightly changed as well (probably to hold down manufacturing costs and prices). With the new Spil-Pruf design, it is possible for liquid to overflow at the top of the spout--especially if the urinal is used by a person lying in bed. Liquid simply does not flow out at the bottom of the spout into the container as quickly and freely as it did with the previous design.
Nevertheless, even though the navy blue Spil-Pruf is less spillproof than the cyan blue Spil-Pruf, I still recommend the product highly. The design concept represents an enormous advance over the design of standard urinals. Because of its ease of use, it makes a real difference in the daily life and independence of an individual who needs to keep a urinal available either on a wheelchair or at the bedside. Also, it is easier for a caregiver to empty.
Because I had the older urinal as a model, I was able to use a hacksaw to modify the new navy blue urinals to make them nearly as efficient as the originals. All that was required was to shorten the tab that blocked the airhole, and to cut slits at the sides of the bottom spout opening to allow liquid to flow out at the sides as well as to the front. However, I would really like to see the manufacturer return to the original Spil-Pruf design.

As we grow older, frequency in urinating becomes evident and a frustrating situation, especially when one is traveling. I find carrying the Male spill-proof urinal in my vehicle allows me the opportunity to pull-over to the edge of the road, use the urinal descreatly, and continue my travels. The contents remain in the urinal until I arrive at my destination and can empty it, and clean it properly. I highly recommend this urinal, not only for a traveling companion, but also for use at home for anyone bed-ridden for whatever reason. Being in the medical field, I can't tell you how many urinals were accidently spilled by patients and their care-givers. This type of urinal prevents those accidents from happening. I did note, however, that a miniscule amount remained in the outer receptive chamber, however, by using a kleenex one can readily eliminate the problem.Product Review: great product
