I ordered these for a friend with macular degeneration to try. They didn't work for her, but I am keeping them. They will be perfect for very close work like getting out splinters. The lenses are very clear. The Bausch and Lomb large acrylic 2X hands free magnifier with a neck strap worked for reading for my friend with macular degeneration. With the Bausch and Lomb magnifier, it was easy and comfortable for her to adjust the position of the newspaper so that the focus was right for her. The clip on the flip ups also require a bit of hand strength and dexterity. For an elderly person who can't see, it is difficult to attach the clip ons. Since they flip up they could be left on the glasses all the time. I think the real problem with using these for reading is that the only way to adjust the focal length is by moving the book, and it might be difficult to get in a comfortable position. I am happy to have them and would have given them five stars if I had been looking for a magnifier that allowed my 65 year old eyes to focus at about three inches.Product Review: Great buy

I bought one of these 10 years ago and clipped it onto a 2X magnifying glasses to be able to see closeup details, like plucking eyebrows, nose hairs, clipping my nails, pulling out splinters, you name it. We call them my "Super Glasses". So, I highly recommend keeping a set around your house. They are VERY durable and have never scratched.
