Product Reviews of MARPAC Dohm DS Dual Speed Electro-Mechanical White Noise Machine / Sound Machine for Sleeping at Home & TravelProduct Review: GREAT white noise machine! Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this white noise machine four months ago and it has been great. The volume is adjustable in both level and depth. We run ours continually in our daughter's nursery and she sleeps through anything. Now when we take her into her room and she hears the white noise sound, it's a cue to her to fall asleep. She is asleep within 1-2 minutes. And it's small enough to take on road trips.
Product Review: Glad I bought this! Summary: 5 Stars
I've had this for a little over a week. Here are some initial thoughts...
Why I got it:
I recently moved into a old brick apartment building, that I discovered has NO sound insulation so I can hear my upstairs neighbors, who have lived there for 38 years, walking around pretty clearly. It's obvious they're not being unreasonable - just walking around. The worst is the squeaking/creaking sound the old hardwood floors make when they walk (mine do it too, so I'm glad there's no one below me). The problem is that it was keeping me up at night and waking me up as soon as they got up at 6 am. The landlords seem sympathetic, but there's not much they can do short of a lot of costly remodeling, and it doesn't sound like they're up for that soon so my options are limited. After the fourth night it was driving me CRAZY so I did some research of what *I* could do, short of staple-gunning sheets of foam to the ceiling, and one suggestion was a white noise machine.
What I was looking for:
I wanted something to just make a sound that I could ignore, that would help lull me to sleep and hopefully cover up the horrid squeaking of floorboards above. A lot of the results for this type of product are really for those spa-type machines that play sounds of whales or a babbling brook or whatever - which might be relaxing, but will not help me sleep (my brain will keep thinking about the sounds). This was one of the only products at a reasonable price that just makes a steady, boring, non-specific, ignorable sound.
What it's like:
It's a small machine about the size a CD in diameter and a few inches tall. It's not the most attractive, but it's also not the ugliest thing. It is that icky off-white plastic color that computers were made from, which is sort of a bummer... a little more effort in the aesthetics department would be nice. However, it's cool that you can manually adjust the machine to create a different pitch of the sound it makes. It's a simple machine - basically a fan inside (except it doesn't blow out air) - and when you twist the cover it opens up air vents that allow you to adjust it to your preference. There's also a toggle switch to change from low to high (or off). It seems solidly constructed, and I like that it's pretty low-tech.
How it's worked:
The first night I used it, I still woke up at 7am when my neighbor got up, but I was able to fall back asleep pretty easily. I also wasn't as cranky during the day. It seems to help me stay asleep longer or at least not wake up all of the way when my neighbors do. Although it doesn't cover up the sounds totally, it provides a nice buffer. I did forget to turn it on one night, and found I had a harder time sleeping than usual - kept waking up and was not able to get a deep sleep. Each night I have used it, I've been able to sleep more deeply and have noticed less and less the noise from above. I am very pleased with that part - it's just what I'd hoped.
NOTE ** Product name
I read the reviews before I ordered it and saw that the Sound Screen and Sleep Mate are the same thing, they just made the Sound Screen version to make it less awkward to use in an office setting. So, thinking that I like the name "Sound Screen" better, I ordered that product specifically. However, the one I received is labeled "Sleep Mate" anyway. I'm annoyed that I did not receive the version I ordered, but not enough to send it back. If I were buying it for an office, I may have returned it -- I mean, SHIP THE PRODUCT THAT IS ADVERTISED, people! I almost took a star off for this but decided not to because I am overall very pleased with the product -- however, if you're buying for an office, heads up!
Product Review: Good White Noise Summary: 4 Stars
The only downfall, is that I thought it would be louder.
But overall, it's the best white noise option that I have found, so far. We've had a lot of success with this, using it for our two children (under the age of two.) It allows me to get things done around the house when I put them to bed, or down for a nap.
Product Review: Good for light sleepers Summary: 5 Stars
I got this for my wife since she's a light sleeper and she LOVES it. Not much to say, its a white noise machine and it has helped her tremendously. 5 stars.
Product Review: Good machine for the price Summary: 4 Stars
Its louder than I expected. We use it in the baby's room and does a good job covering noise from the tv, dog, phone, conversation, etc downstairs while baby is sleeping. I'd recomend it for this use.
