Product Reviews of MARPAC Dohm DS Dual Speed Electro-Mechanical White Noise Machine / Sound Machine for Sleeping at Home & Travel

Product Review: 3 years, 5 different purchases - still going strong
Summary: 5 Stars

We have purchased 5 separate Marpac Sleep Mates for ourselves, children, and grandchildren over the past three years. They are great for children who are light sleepers, young couples who live in a busy city, people who travel, couples with neighbors whose dog barks, and college students with loud room mates - this represents everyone in our family. There have been no operational problems and everyone loves their noise machines. This is the machine to have.

Product Review: A Peaceful Nights Sleep
Summary: 4 Stars

Both my daughter and husband are extremely light sleepers (unlike me) and have difficulty both falling to sleep and staying asleep. We have three dogs and noisy neighbors so both are usually awakened at some point during the night. With this machine, however, our nights have been much more peaceful as the sound emitted cancels out most nightly distractions! We've all become accustomed to hearing it and my daughter will request it at night if I've forgotten to put it on. Some nights the mother makes a strange labored sound but after about half an hour or so that's usually gone and is my only minor complaint about the machine.

Product Review: A little loud, but the best
Summary: 4 Stars

The background part of this review will be the same as for the sleep sheep by cloud 9.

So we just went through colic and the dreaded 4 month sleep regression phase. When we moved our baby to her own room around 3 months, we put a floor fan in there for white noise. Her wall is right next to our TV room, her brother is next door and a loud 2 year old, and her big window is right on a busy street. And she was never a really good sleeper. While for some babies (lucky lucky parents) a sleep machine is all you need - for us we knew it was just a stress-reliever for us, so that we wouldn't have to worry that noises were interfering with her sleep. (We could tick that item off the list and move on.) The fan was just way too cold.

So I purchased the sound machine and also the sleep sheep. Our baby is not so easy that we could give her a stuffed toy or hang it on her crib, and have it only play while she is falling asleep at the beginning of the night. She would need it again every time she woke up.

The marpac is the best white noise machine I have heard. I had purchased one in the past from Brookstone - it was terrible - inconsistent, annoying, etc. This is great, sounds like a whooshing fan or vacuum, and has multiple settings (two via the switch, and a range via turning it). We have it on the softest, and had to stick it in her closed closet as it was surprisingly loud. In the daytime, we often open her closet a bit for naps, as there is more ambient noise during the day.

We were able to get rid of the cold fan, and who knows if it helps her sleep better, but it vertainly hasn't made anything worse, and it is peace of mind for us.

Product Review: A true sleep-saver
Summary: 5 Stars

As a college profesor becoming part of a "faculty in residence" program in a student residence hall, I knew I needed help. I already owned a sleep machine featuring sounds--crickets, the ocean, a locomotive, etc.--but it never really worked for me because my ear could always pick up a pattern, and I'd get so focused on it that I couldn't fall asleep. Then I read reviews of the Marpac 980A white noise sleep machine and they were so positive that I decided to give it a try. Magic--steady and pattern-free. I'm getting to sleep now better than I ever have, this despite having the nearly always busy laundry room right on the other side of the wall from my bed. Hurray for the Marpac 980A!

Product Review: AHH...peace, at last!
Summary: 5 Stars

I think there is a contest in my neighborhood, that I'm unaware of. I suspect it's designed to find out which homes can produce the most noise. My neighbors are definitely in on it. They're probably in the top five! I surmise that when their dog isn't barking continuously on its own, they're standing in the yard yelling 'speak' and throwing meaty tidbits her way.

In addition, one child is always toting a boom-box, blaring rap, while the other is bouncing a basketball off the side of their house, sometimes for eight hours straight, often running onto my porch to impress me with his dribbling skills. I think the neighbor behind me is in the top five, too. He's taken up drums, and on the weekend he moves his stereo, complete with auditorium sized speakers and sub-woofer, onto his patio for my enjoyment. Ah, yes---this is the good life!

Okay, okay...maybe it is just me, and this is the normal hum of 'daylight living,' from which I've become so removed. I do a lot of 12 hour night shift work, and I can't expect the world to come to a screeching halt because I'd like a little sleep. But, something had to give!

Something did! My new Marpac 980 recently arrived and I couldn't be more satisfied. It is small (and portable), but solidly built, with cushioning on the bottom to prevent vibration, or furniture scaring. The instructions are clear regarding how to adjust the volume quality, with the top rim and collar. It also has a low and high setting switch. I set mine on the highest level...remember, my neighbors are in the top five.

For such a small machine, the sound really fills the room and there aren't any quirky artifacts, or rattles. The sound is consistent and pure. I quickly adjusted to this new, distraction from the madness, and found it quite comforting.

On the very first trial, a water main had broken close to my home. There were Public Service workers with their, noisy Bobcat, digging to China for hours. I could barely hear them. Ah, the sound of success.

If your neighborhood enters the contest, you might just want to consider one of these machines, too. Sleep deprivation is bad for both mental and physical health. Just ask me :-).

Update 11/19/10: My first Marpac unit is still going strong, and I have since ordered a second one. I think I'm addicted! I don't only use them to sleep with, now. I use one anytime I feel like blocking out the outside world---like when reading, studying, or searching for a Zen moment. These units still receive my highest recommendation. I will never be without them, until they are extracted from my cold, lifeless hands.
