Product Reviews of L.E.D. Fiberoptic Otoscope - Halogen OPHTHALMOSCOPE Diagnostic Kit with Soft Protective Leatherette Case!

Product Review: Good for student
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased this product for PA and it definitely serves its purpose. The light is bright enough to see into the ear canal, nose, etc... and it is easy to use. My only issue is that the pieces that go on the otoscope are not the same as used by other otoscopes so I have to buy more from somewhere for them to fit properly.

Product Review: Good otoscope/ophtalmoscope
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm still learning how to do a fundus examination and i can see the retinal vessels and optic disk with little dificulty. The tympanic membrane is easy to visualize with this device.

Product Review: Great For Med Students
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this product to use during physical examinations during my 2nd year in med school, and both the opthalmoscope and otoscope work great.

Opthalmoscope: The light seemed somewhat dim at first, and the scope was missing some of the features that the more expensive scopes had(e.g. colored filters), but the scope worked great. I had no problems visualizing the retina, optic disk, and blood vessels. I used some of my colleagues' much more expensive scopes and could not tell a difference, except for the PanOptic of course. I gave a 4/5 for two reasons. First, the more expensive scopes did have a lot of filters - although i don't know if anybody ever uses them. Second, I thought the scope was a little big. It is the same size as most everyone else's scope, but I just don't see why they can't make it with smaller batteries. AA batteries have 1/3 the capacity of C batteries, but i would be willing the make the tradeoff for a lighter device.

Otoscope: The light was super bright. I don't know what improvements you could make on this, since it is a pretty simple device. 5/5

Product Review: Great but not perfect
Summary: 4 Stars

I agree with the all the reviews about the light source. I purchase the non-LED scopes and return them (see my other review). The otoscope has strong bring white light and great for detail exam. However, it does not fit the Welch Allyn specular piece as claimed and often fell off. I am able to manage using it but can be a problem when seeing young children.

Also the ophthalmoscope is fair quality. I have to say the Welch Allyn one has better optic technology and much easier to see the fundi than this scope. (I spent time learning to look at fundi from my optometry friends while in med school and acquired good skills) But it will do the job for seeing Red Reflex in infant. I wonder, does this fit the ophthal scope head made by Welch Allyn? If it does, it will be a good combination.

Product Review: Great for Parents!
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this because I have a little girl and I wanted an otoscope to look in her ear. The Ophtalmoscope was a secondary nice to have item.

I purchased the LED version of the otoscope because I really never wanted to have to worry about bulbs or batteries. I just wanted something that worked whenever I thought that my little girl was coming down with an ear infection. Its really hard to tell with little kids. If you mention "ear" they will immediately start pulling and tugging and if you don't ask, your kid can wind up with a serious eye infection and you might not know.

I decided to be on the safe side and get an otoscope. I read about 2.5v and 3.2v halogen otoscopes and with the 3.2 being the brighter of the two. But I read that bulbs do burn out and that you have to be very gentle with them. Also some of the true professional models tend to be very pricey for what I needed. I opted for the LED version.

This one came nicely packaged and arrived very quickly - two days after I ordered from Pro Physician Diagnostics. I always worry about ordering from third party companies and prefer direct from Amazon but Pro Physician Diagnotics did very well. They sent me an e-mail confirming order and a tracking number when they shipped and the product was in my mailbox two days later. Great service.

The other concern I had was with how bright the LED light would be. I must say that the light is very bright. I can see anything very well with it. A nice plus is that the light is dimmable you can go from little light to max light in gradual increment which is very nice. The item also has a glass 4x magnifier to the otoscope which is nice. the lens can be swing out of the way if you want to look without magnification or if you want to clean the lens.

I wound up having to use the opthalmoscope to look at a tooth that my daughter was complaining about. The light was bright and it worked nicely.

I'm very happy with my purchase. Thank you for having this and for making it affordable enough for a concerned parent to have.

That said, I don't feel comfortable practicing medicine with my child or anyone so if I see anything that I don't understand or if I don't understand anything I see, off to the doctor she goes but it does help to make that difficult call or to avoid false alarms.

I'm also not a doctor so can't compare to the true high end and high cost models but for looking in someone's ear or mouth this seems great.
