Customer Review: The best in a very weak competitive field

I also bought this keyboard for my mother who is in the beginning stages of macular degeneration. She likes it a lot more than I do, which is all that is important. Mom uses an iMac. This is a PC-style keyboard. There are no "big letters keyboards" targeted at the Mac market, but this one came closest to a Mac look. My comments about this keyboard come from a seasoned Mac-user's perspective, not Mom's.
* There is no auxilary USB port on the keyboard to plug a USB mouse into. It forces you to burn a scarce USB port on the iMac rather than simply plug the mouse into the keyboard, which all Apple-designed keyboards provide.
* When I see a product offering support for W95, I know we're dealing with an old design. It looks and feels like it came out of the 80s.
* The letters appear to be some sort of "iron on" transfer rather than a double-shot injection mold. Only time will tell how permanent these letters are. Each key's letter has a shiny, uneven texture where the letter was transferred, that I find visually annoying, but Mom can't see it.
* Plugging this keyboard into Mom's iMac running OSX 10.5 brings up a special window that identifies the layout characteristics of the keyboard. It asks what keys are on either side of the SHIFT keys. That's it. After that, the iMac interprets the keyboard reasonably well. There is NO need for any special driver to use it on a modern Mac!
* Since it's a PC-style keyboard, you have to get used to ALT and the Windows keys rather than OPTION and COMMAND (Mac function keys). CNTL is common to both sides of the computer camps.
* As a Mac user, you lose a lot of the "auxiliary keys" that you will find on a Mac keyboard. For instance: the CD/DVD eject key and audio volume up/down/mute keys are non-existent. Mac users don't have/don't need a NUM LOCK key, but you get one. A novice user like Mom doesn't mind, but a more sophisticated Mac user would find himself missing these keys, requiring many extra mouse movements to compensate.
* The most annoying feature I found about this keyboard is that its keys are shaped differently than a Mac's keys. In particular, the RETURN key is quite narrow, compared with a Mac's double-wide RETURN key. Additionally, the manufacturer stuck an extra key between the QUOTE key and the RETURN key, the forward-slash key, so when you casually reach for the RETURN key with your pinky, you often hit this extra "\" key instead. Yuck.
* Echoing an earlier comment, the feel of the keys is non-uniform. The BACKSPACE key takes an extra effort to push compared to the other keys. Why couldn't it have been the dumb NUM LOCK key instead?
* The keyboard is quite ugly, typical PC aircraft-carrier size, in sharp contrast to Apple's much sleeker keyboards. Why must PC keyboards be so massively huge anyway?
* Why on earth would Amazon offer a non-white-background keyboard to visually-impaired people? The LAST thing these people can read is BLACK keyboard with white letters. This flies in the face of common sense. Ditto for the horribly ugly yellow-on-black keyboard, too. Anyone with limited vision requires a white background and black letters. Period! This keyboard is not white, but more a light grey or beige.
Bottom line, Mom is content with this keyboard on her iMac and says it helps her a great deal. I notice that her emails to me contain fewer typos, which she attributes to the large-letter keyboard.
