I usually use the ThermaCare heating pads, which are disposable, and take a good half hour to warm up. They are also relatively expensive as a consumable product.
I was hoping that the IHT Heat Pack - Menstrual would be a satisfactory replacement to the ThermaCare pads, but unfortunately, this will not be the case.
This arrived in a box that was clearly marked "MENSTRUAL" on the outside. Thanks, I really needed my UPS delivery guy to know that I'm buying menstrual products. Might want to change that, IHT. It arrived in its hardened, crystallized form, and I'm not sure how it got that way - did it get jostled around enough to activate it during shipment, or was it intended to arrive that way? If it got activated by jostling, it could potentially get inadvertently activated in my purse. I was surprised at how hard its crystallized form is - it's like a rock.
It was no problem to boil it and melt it, though. I made sure to put a cloth in the bottom of the pot, to keep the heating pad's plastic exterior from touching the pot and potentially melting or scorching. Once the inside has melted, it's just like a bag of water. The metal disk floats around inside, and you just flex it to activate it.
It was difficult to activate the first time, flexing the metal disc took quite a bit of effort. The second time around, though, it only took a bit of pressure to activate it, I didn't even really need to "flex" it, just press the center a bit. Once activated, crystals begin forming and spreading instantly. You have to squish it around a bit to keep it from becoming hardened in an inconvenient shape. It heats up in seconds, and once it's all crystallized, it's almost too hot to handle. When I used it, I had to put a flannel cloth around it to keep from burning my skin. Given that it gets so hot, it would be nice for the manufacturer to include a flannel slip cover or something to make it easier to use.
To wear this thing, it's a little tricky. I ended up tucking it inside my jeans, but it is a little tight, and I worried with every movement that I would burst the thing. It is also not recommended to be worn tight to the body by the manufacturer (so what, then, am I expected to languish in bed when I'm using this thing?). Since there's no adhesive or strap or anything, it tends to slide down, so I had to keep tugging it back into place.
And for how long it lasts... it cooled down to about body temperature within about 2 hours. Quite disappointing, compared to the 6-8 hours I get out of my ThermaCare heating pads.
Bottom line - I think I'll keep it, because it is nice to have instant heat, but this will only be used to tide me over until the ThermaCare heats up. So now I'm just using two products, where before I just used one. Not what I had in mind, but I'll take it, I guess. It does serve a purpose.
