Product Reviews of HoMedics SS-2000 Sound Spa Relaxation Sound Machine with 6 Nature Sounds, SilverProduct Review: Disappointing Summary: 1 Stars
I bought one of these as a Christmas present for a relative. When I heard it for a few minutes, I thought I'd like to have one, too. So I ordered another one for my own use.
The one I received was defective -- it would only play one sound. (Amazon's return and replacement procedure worked smoothly and rapidly.)
The replacement worked as advertised. However, the product is unsatisfactory.
- The speaker is small, apparently cheaply made, and sounds "tinny".
- After sampling all choices of sounds, the only selection that was of any interest to me was the "gentle rain". However after listening for an hour or so, I began to discern where the sound "looped". Once the recurring pattern of sounds became apparent, it couldn't be ignored. Instead of being relaxing, it had become annoying. Consequently the product is now useless to me.
My recommendation is to avoid this product.
Product Review: Distracting Sound Machine Summary: 2 Stars
I've been having trouble sleeping lately, so I decided to go back to using Sound Machines. In the past I always set them to the Ocean Waves sounds and left them on all night. Because of this, they frequently died on me due to so much use - so it was time to buy a new one! One great feature about this sound machine is the timer option.
I was looking forward to falling asleep to the sound of ocean waves once again, but unfortunately that has not happened with this machine. Personally it doesn't sound like the seagulls are in the background at all. It sounds like they are right there on the shore near where the sounds are being recorded. In order to hear the ocean waves sounding like more than just white noise you have to turn it up loud enough that the seagulls are distracting and disturbing when trying to get a good night's sleep.
The rain sounds nice, but there are a few dripping sounds that are also distracting. It's like rain dripping off of an awning rather than just pitter-pattering on the ground. Maybe it's because I've had insomnia lately, but it's just really too noticeable to fall asleep to.
I really want to like this product, but if I can't sleep to the sounds of the ocean with it, then it's really just not going to work out between us. I've just not been able to switch it off of "Waterfall" - which is basically just White Noise.
I can't really comment on the other sounds too much. I bought this machine to also tune out the crickets outside my window - so I haven't used the "Summer Night" sounds. The "Rainforest" is basically the same issue, but with birds instead of crickets, so I haven't tried listening to that one much either. The "Heartbeat" I must agree with others and say is a bit creepy - though I understand the use of it for babies.
Product Review: Ditto on the bad volume knob Summary: 2 Stars
Like all the others, it was great until the volume knob shorted out. Same story ... you have to wiggle it to get it to work. Not sure how long this will even work.
Product Review: Do NOT buy if you want ocean sounds! Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this for traveling so I could sleep better in strange hotel rooms. It is very portable and works well off 4 AA batteries. The rain and waterfall sounds are the only ones I can use for sleep. The ocean sound track is a HUGE disappointment - it has seagulls shrieking in the background which I find impossible to fall asleep to.
Product Review: Do not buy this brand! Summary: 1 Stars
We are on our second one of these sound machines, wrongly thinking that the first one we had was just a defective model. However, the new one is doing the exact same thing. After using it for a month or so, they both began to "short out" on us. My baby would be napping and it would just shut off and come back on, which wakes him up every single time. So frustrating!! And now when we go to turn it on, we have to bang on it four or five times to get it to stay on. Not a very effective way to keep your sleeping baby asleep in your arms! We are online looking for a new one, and will NEVER recommend this one to a friend.
