Product Review: A "must have" product if you have a baby at home

At first my wife was rather skeptical about me using an otoscope. "I'd rather have a professional to do it", she said. But after I found out our baby girl had ear infection twice before she showed any symptom, now she asks me to check our baby's ears if she has a cold for more than a week. My baby does not complain much when she has ear infection, and she had infection many times when she first went to day care. If we didn't have this otoscope at home, we probably wouldn't know it until the infection became very bad!
This otoscope shows the eardrum very clearly, enough for me to determine whether there is an ear infection or not. You will need to practise many times until you know the shape AND color of a healthy eardrum. Try it on adults first. Remember NOT to force it into ears. You don't want to risk damaging the eardrum. Ask your baby's pediatrician if you need help (my baby's pediatrician showed me how to use it once).
It's not always easy to tell whether there is an infection or not. If you are not sure, and your baby is cranky, take him/her to the pediatrician. After all we didn't receive any professional training so don't take the risk.
Note that the view of this otoscope is not as big as a professional one. But a professional one is very expensive. If you want to buy a professional one, but you never use an otoscope before, I suggest you try out this one first.

This is a small inexpensive home use Otoscope that as an ER RN I would highly recommend. Bright, good amplification, metal casing, and easy to use. This is not a industrial Welch Allen you would see in a Dr. office but a good inexpensive alternative to look into your child's ears.Product Review: It does what it is supposed to do, and quite well.

I LOVE this otoscope!! We have been lucky < knock on wood> that we have not had a lot of ear infections. After the first one, I decided to buy this so I can save trips to the doctors by knowing if there is an ear infection before going. My pediatrician showed me what it looks like in their ear when there is an infection and although we still have to go to the doctors to get a real doctor's diagnosis, we have only gone now when we knew ahead of time there was an ear infection!! This has been one of the best purchases I have made. It is also great to see if there is wax deeper in the ear and helped to know it was gone after cleaning!!Product Review: I love this simplicity and excellent functionality of this inexpensive otoscope

This is a really nice otoscope for a very nice price. This is the second one I have purchased. I am giving this as a gift to a sister. I am a Family Practice Physician and a Mom to a 4 year old who suffers chronic allergies and ear problems. I have 3 professional model otoscopes that I use at my office, my problem was that they were always at the office when I needed them at home. I found this model on Amazon and have been very happy with my purchase. The light is very bright, actually as bright if not brighter than my professional model otoscopes. The lens is also very good. I can see the eardrum just as clear as I can with any other otoscope I have ever used in my career. Considering the $25 price this otosocpe is very tough to beat for an inexpensive model that is light weight, easy to handle and store, and functions nearly as well as any other otoscope I have used to date.
