Product Reviews of Germ Guardian GG-1000 UV-C Air SanitizerProduct Review: Handy Air Sanitizer Summary: 4 Stars
This is our second air sanitizer. We like to bring one with us on vacations to help the air quality in hotel rooms. Since we have allergies, we keep this one in our living room and another in our bedroom. They are very handy but you can certainly hear them like a small vacuum cleaner. I haven't noticed a decrease in dust or anything, but the air does seem to smell better.
Product Review: I can't believe it works... but it does. Summary: 5 Stars
Figured that it probably wouldn't work, but gave it a try based on reviews. Turns out it works amazingly well - I'm shocked.
Product Review: I'm impressed! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought one of these plug-in Germ Guardians in hope to help with allergies, household smells, and to possibly avoid passing along colds in our household. I was very skeptical of it at first... I plugged it in next to our diaper pail not expecting it to take away the smell and came back a little while later and the smell was gone! I noticed that the air in the room smelled a little fresher and I also felt a slight breeze from it all the way across the room.
I use a lot of bleach when I do the laundry and the entire laundry room reeks of bleach after. I plugged in the germ guardian and the bleach smell was pretty much eliminated - it didn't go away entirely but was about 95% better.
The Germ Guardian isn't as quiet as I would like it to be. I tried using it in our bedroom and it gives off a constant humming noise (similar to white noise) which I don't mind, but it also gives off a noise which sounds a lot like when you have ringing in your ears which is slightly annoying. Perhaps it's just my unit however and not all do this. It also does not cover a large space. The box says it covers around 480 square feet, which isn't much. I plan to buy one for each of my bathrooms and might use one or two in each bedroom.
Overall it's a great product and I'm very pleased with it. I have already ordered three more.
Product Review: It works fine so far Summary: 4 Stars
I learned a few weeks ago that I had a rodent infestation in my house. They'd gotten in (apparently) through the cat door, and been living under the stove and refrigerator, and had slipped from there into a space beneath some cupboards. They were amazingly quiet... I had no idea they were in the house, and my cat didn't either (not that she would likely have cared, she was a very elderly, sleepy cat.)
Anyway, a few weeks ago I started smelling something unpleasant in the kitchen. The smell would come and go. I cleaned the usual surfaces but it came back. I finally looked under the stove and was appalled to see a mountain of mouse droppings. Then the smell really hit, as, apparently, one of them died somewhere in the walls of the house. It hit during a heat wave, exploded throughout the house, and almost drove me out of the house.
Locating their "nest" and cleaning up the droppings helped, but not totally. There was still a bad residual smell in the kitchen, which would sometimes drift into the rest of the house. It was bad enough, on hot or humid days, to make me want to go outside. I finally went to the local Fred Meyer and found the germguardian GG10000 on sale, and decided on impulse to buy three of them, for the living room, kitchen and my home office, three rooms where I spend a lot of time.
That was last night. Today, 13 or 14 hours later, I can say that they have helped. The air is breathable. No trace so far today of the bad smell I've been living with for over three weeks. Also my allergies feel a little better, my breathing clearer than usual. So they must be doing something.
I'm not sure if the change is totally due to the germguardian, because after installing them, I did one more scrubdown of the areas in the kitchen where the mice had been hanging out. But so far so good. I'm glad I bought the product.
The one thing I have a dispute with is the advertisement that they are "whisper quiet." I expected an essentially silent product, but they're not. As others have commented, there's a constant (low level) white noise from the fan. I don't mind it too much, it's way better than the smell. It's not an unpleasant sound, just constant, like a steady soft fan. I suppose the sound could get irritating after a while. But right now I'm just happy they got rid of the horrific dead rodent/residual mouse droppings/residual mouse urine smell. I'm feeling better about the house and can start having friends over again. Glad so far that I bought the Germguardian(s).
Apart from that, I can say I like the design of the product, it looks cool and high tech.
Product Review: It's been a year ... without getting sick Summary: 5 Stars
I got a set of two of these about a year ago on Amazon. One is in the bedroom, one in the family room ... the two most used rooms in the house. Since getting them, I haven't come down with any of the usual seasonal illnesses (colds/flu, etc.). Realistically, I can't say with any degree of certainty that the absence of the usual cold/flu is due to the Germ Guardian ... but, I will say that this is the first year that I haven't had at least one cold or flu issue for as long as I can remember. Based on that, I just ordered replacement bulbs for my set since it's worth continuing it if I can make it another year without getting sick!
The other write-ups are correct in that it doesn't generate a tremendous amount of air flow ... but I have mine placed in a unobstructed area so it's not blocked by furniture or have restricted airflow and it seems to do just fine.
