Product Reviews of Fromm Straight Razor #72r * 5/8" Round PointProduct Review: Great first razor Summary: 4 Stars
Like the other reviewers, I agree this razor will need a bit of tlc to get truly shave ready. Very well balanced, lightweight, easy to maneuver. Out of the box the edge is a little odd, it is not a nice even bevel on both sides. On one side, it curves upward from the ends to the middle, and on the other it starts high on the ends and dips to the middle. When you look at it, it appears as if it was honed between 2 wheels and the blade curved slightly and the pressure wasn't even. I'm a bit of a knife nut, and wanted to play with a straight razor, so I went cheap with this one. I've taken the edge off (sliced it accross my lapping stone) and started all over from an extra-coarse diamond stone up through a 12,000 water stone, then leather bench hones with lapping paste, chromium oxide, and then on to the final leather strop 5 times so far. Learning how to get it very sharp very fast, but that weird bevel is still there.
The printing on the plastic handle rubbed off the first time I used it, but IMHO it looks better all black anyway.
I would highly recommend this as a first razor, or as a cheap practice razor if you want to learn how to sharpen and hone your own. Get a good strop though, you will need it if you want to shave with this! And get a good brush! Save money on your razor and splurge on the strop and especially the brush.
Product Review: Name brand + good shaver Summary: 5 Stars
This razor was easy to hone to sharpness and gives a good, easy shave.
Like all new razors, generally they need a light honing to get to shave-ready state.
If you want class, try Dovo or Henckels, but it will cost you 1.5-3x the cost of this razor.
