I expected something that runs on a couple AA batteries to be a bit underpowered, but this does a good job of mixing powdered drinks. It's also easy to clean. A hand-held blender does a better job, but has to be plugged in to work, and cords are a hassle when you're in a hurry. This mixer is small and handy and self-contained.
I give it four stars rather than five because I wish it were two or three inches longer, which would give me a little more confidence using it to mix deeper drinks -- I'm scared to get the battery/motor pack wet. It requires a bit of dexterity to mix drinks in taller glasses with it. But even when the mixer paddle doesn't reach all the way to the bottom of the glass, the drinks are still thoroughly mixed.

I was so anxious to receive this so I could make my protein drinks at work. It worked for all of 10 seconds and quit. Tried 3 fresh sets of batteries. No luck. It costs as much to return it as I paid for it. What a waste of money.Product Review: great mixer

I wasn't sure I'd love this... it was going to be a hit or bust, in any case. I'm glad it turned out to be a hit!
For anyone who might not want the hassle of cleaning up a big, heavy hamilton beach drink mixer when you just want to, say, add protein to something... this is great. Making cocoa? Awesome. Mixing any powder into any liquid (I imagine metamucil and such are great, too, though I don't need those drinks)... this works really well and clean up is a 5 second rinse away.
It was inexpensive, it works on batteries (uses very little power-I've yet to replace batteries yet), and works well. One thing to note, though, is that your glass size will matter and you want something pretty tall just cause... yeah, I've splattered myself (not the first or last gadget I've tested beyond the written guidelines!).. In any case, if you drink protein shakes and want to be able to take those or other mixes to work or traveling, here is a very viable option for how to effectively mix... since face it, a spoon just doesn't cut it for whey or real cocoa powder!!
