Product Reviews of Exergen Temporal Artery Thermometer MODEL# TAT-2000C

Product Review: Consistent readings, easy to use
Summary: 5 Stars

This thermometer has always given me consistent readings, and has given me the same results as a rectal temp on my baby when I've used a rectal thermometer to double check.

Product Review: Dangerously inconsistent - useless
Summary: 1 Stars

I think it's dangerous to take the advertising copy, or the instructions, at face value for this product.

I've played around with it, and depending on whether I slide it right or left on my own face, there's a 1.5 degree difference. In other words, in one direction I'm normal and in the other I have a fever. Using this to diagnose a sick kid would scare the hell out of me.

Really, I have no idea how they can legally sell them. A [...] glass thermometer will give you consistent results within a tenth of a degree, forever.

This one didn't even make it to the "comparison" stage, because it can't agree with itself.

If you could pick one up at a garage sale for [...], it's mildly entertaining to point it at things and see how hot they are - the wall, your roof, your sidewalk - but it's probably inaccurate for that too, since it isn't designed for it. It says my ceiling is 80.5 degrees. I have utterly no need to know that, but it's mildly interesting.

But really, don't rely on the readings for medical diagnostic purposes. Get a good digital, and calibrate it against a glass mercury thermometer occasionally, as well as periodically establishing its consistency with multiple readings.

Product Review: Do I Have A Fever?
Summary: 5 Stars

We are at the stage in life that when we go to a doctor, he/she always asks if we have a temperature. Well, we don't know. In the old days, the doctor took our temperature. My husband is very crotchety about having his temperature taken by sticking a tiny glass rod in his mouth and he has to hold it there for some time. He LOVES this "magic wand" style reading. Our doctor also thinks it is very good. What more could we say?

Product Review: Don't Waste Your Money!
Summary: 1 Stars

We got this thermometer at our baby shower and I was excited, because I read it was the absolute best. Uninvasive. Quick. Accurate. Perfect, right? WRONG!!!! This thing is Terrible! Every time I check my own temperature it tells me I have a fever--when I verify it with a normal--under the tongue--thermometer I'm always 98.6 on the nose. I'm not sick. My baby's not sick. But to this thing we're always running a temp. It's unreliable and unsafe--causing you to think your baby is feverish when in actuality he is perfectly fine. So you end up thinking your baby has a temp and you give him unneeded medicine!!! That's just wrong, this thing should be taken off the market.

Product Review: Don't throw away the rectal thermometer
Summary: 1 Stars

My 16 month old little boy suffers from febrile seizures which means I take a thermometer very seriously. Recently he had a seizure and we checked his temperature using this thermometer and it showed to be normal. I panicked because my child doesn't have these seizures without a fever involved. I double checked with a rectal thermometer and it showed to be a WHOPPING 5 degrees higher confirming that my son did indeed have a fever. His body was burning up and I am so shocked that this thermometer didn't show his true temperature. I was always suspicious because it always seemed to vary and now I know my suspicions were correct. I may (very small may) try this thermometer again when my baby is older but for now I'm sticking with tried and true.
