Product Reviews of Exergen Temporal Artery Thermometer MODEL# TAT-2000CProduct Review: Dangerously inconsistent - useless Summary: 1 StarsI think it's dangerous to take the advertising copy, or the instructions, at face value for this product.
I've played around with it, and depending on whether I slide it right or left on my own face, there's a 1.5 degree difference. In other words, in one direction I'm normal and in the other I have a fever. Using this to diagnose a sick kid would scare the hell out of me.
Really, I have no idea how they can legally sell them. A [...] glass thermometer will give you consistent results within a tenth of a degree, forever.
This one didn't even make it to the "comparison" stage, because it can't agree with itself.
If you could pick one up at a garage sale for [...], it's mildly entertaining to point it at things and see how hot they are - the wall, your roof, your sidewalk - but it's probably inaccurate for that too, since it isn't designed for it. It says my ceiling is 80.5 degrees. I have utterly no need to know that, but it's mildly interesting.
But really, don't rely on the readings for medical diagnostic purposes. Get a good digital, and calibrate it against a glass mercury thermometer occasionally, as well as periodically establishing its consistency with multiple readings.
Product Review: Had high hopes, but it is Inconsistent. Unreliable, Useless, pick something else. Summary: 1 StarsI checked all the options available and thought this was the best for a baby. I was terribly wrong, this thermometer has incredible variations within measurements, these could range from 1 to 4 degrees. At first I thought I was using it incorrectly (not only on the boy but also on me and my wife), but after asking (4) friends to take measurements (one of them is a doctor) I realized that it was not me but the thermometer. To be sure I took it with us to the following appointment with the pediatrician, and guess what, the same happened.
I followed the most obsessive measurement taking waiting 60, 30 and 10 seconds between measurements, and the discrepancies still remained. So finally I gave up. This is really frustrating I will have to do a lot of research again I hope I do not get tricked by what seem to me "misleading reviews". Good luck in your search!
Product Review: Accurate, Fast and Convenient Summary: 5 StarsMuch better and faster than the ear or mouth thermometer and without hygiene issues. Just rub the meter across the forehead and you get your reading. Accurate, Fast and Convenient. Highly Recommend!
Product Review: Works well...now fix it! Summary: 3 StarsBy all accounts this should be a five star review. The temporal thermometer gives a consistent temp measurement, is almost instant, and is non-invasive. But I'm dropping two stars for two issues. First, and biggest...no back-light! It's 3am, my baby has a fever, I do not want to turn on a light in that nursery. A back-light would make this readable in any situation. Secondly, I wish there were a way to turn off the beeping.
I love the product, but it needs the back-light improvement.
Product Review: My favorite baby product Summary: 5 StarsI love this thermometer! We added it to our medicine cabinet when a friend recommended it after we adopted twins. When we got it my husband and I both practiced using it, based on other reviews. We both were able to get consistent readings on anyone in the family. After just 2 weeks with it, we were able to spot the 104 fever my five year old son spiked and get to the doctor ASAP. So easy to use and, with practice, quite accurate.
