Product Reviews of Escali High-Capacity Bathroom Scale with Body Fat/Body Water Monitoring (440lb / 200kg)

Product Review: Good
Summary: 4 Stars

After 8 months of daily use, I'd say it's a pretty good scale. I think it rounds off, and will weigh you more at your historical weight to make the scale look more accurate. For example, it might have me weighing 138.2 for 3 days in a row when it's somewhat improbable for me given my diet or lackthereof. Same thing goes with the bodyfat. As far as the tipping is concerned, I've had the scale tip on me maybe 3 times when I wasn't paying attention. All in all, a pretty sound buy for a bodyfat/water/weight scale.

Very nice design. Seems to measure accuratly. Step on it several times and it says the same or very close. I think the bmi is a little off. Because if I calculate it myself I get a lower number. And I am not sure about the hydration thing. Its interesting to know what it thinks. Not as huge as I thought it would be. But big enough for almost anybody. A good buy!

Product Review: Good Quality, But Exercise Caution When Using...

If I have any one problem with Escali's High-Capacity Bathroom Scale, it would be it's propensity towards tipping. It's a sturdy scale; the platform design made me skeptical that a piece of glass -- although, thick -- would support my weight, though I was proven wrong. The scale doesn't feel a tad bit under duress from me or my much lighter wife being on it. However, having large thighs, and wearing a size 13 shoe, I find the platform difficult for me to stand completely upright on. Both the width and the length of the circular platform make it a bit of a challenge for me to safely square my feet and accurately get a reading. Therein lies the problem: when stepping on the scale, because my feet don't fit perfectly, my first step tends to be more towards it's side, tipping the scale if I don't quickly place my second foot down to plant myself. I often have to hold on to the bathroom door, balancing myself, until both feet are on the platform securely. The suction cups help, but can only do so much. Now, is this a huge problem, does this stop me from actually getting an accurate, consistent read, or from even using the scale at all? Simply, no. I've not fallen once. Though, I'd imagine someone with balance issues, knee problems, or other impairments could potentially find this scale a bit unsafe. (Admittedly, there's a learning curve for how to stand on it, and I've since learned and now am able to get accurate readings).

My reason for purchasing this scale was my thinking I may be near it's 440lbs. limit. As it turns out, I was about 100lbs. or so off, having not been weighed in a few years. So I bought it for its weight capacity, not its features (which seem to drive up it's price), and my overestimate in weight may have cost me $10-$15. For this reason, I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a high capacity scale with no knowledge of their current weight to consider being weighed by a physician first, and then buying according to how much capacity you need (like me, you may feel like you've gained a lot, but may be surprised to find you're actually in a cheaper, normal capacity scale's range).

All in all, the Escali is consistent (I often get the same reading two, three, even four times in a row with a normal foot placement), and durable (in six months, not one error warning, no signs of wear), but the expensive, fancy "features" couldn't be more useless. Anyone with large amounts of muscle can easily fool the scale's body fat indicator (and I'm not certain how to prove or disprove it's water weight reading). Fortunately, you can still use it just as a scale, bypassing the programmable settings by placing one foot on it to turn it "on", then removing your foot before it brings up the sequence of numbers corresponding to the users you've entered. Yet, if these features make this scale anymore expensive than other high capacity ones, you may want the next one lower in price. Still, what you pay is fair for a pretty solid quality, high capacity scale.

Update, November 28, 2010: Unfortunately, this scale gets a downgrade in rating from me now, as I've just put it out with the trash. The above review and the previous 4 star rating were true up to the very end of August '10. My wife and I came back from vacation expecting to find that we had gained a bit of weight, somewhere in the 5lbs. range. Upon weighing ourselves, we both were ironically 5lbs. lighter than what we expected (essentially, the scale showing our pre-trip weight, suggesting we had not gained after a weekend of indulgence). We were skeptical at that point, and watched our weight cautiously. For the next two months what we found were readings that were 5lbs. off in either direction depending on the day. For a person trying to lose weight, like myself, thinking you've lost weight one day only to be falsely told you gained 5lbs. is crushing. Not only that, but the "tap on" feature stopped working, relegating my wife and I to click the physical buttons for the program mode in order to get to the scale (not supposed to happen). I contacted Escali's warranty department and they suggested I pack and ship the scale to Utah so they can see if anything was wrong with it, not offering a warranty replacement or an apology for my inconvenience, just that they'd look into it. I've since bought an EatSmart Precision Digital Bathroom Scale w/ Extra Large Backlit 3.5" Display and "Step-On" Technology and it's worked like a dream; no more "tap on", no more scale tipping, no unnecessary fluff features driving up the cost, just a scale that works from a company I trust. Please, I urge you, do not buy this Escali product. It may work at first (hence the 2 star rating instead of just 1), but this model's proclivity to failing in a brief amount of time make it unreliable, and wholly not worth your time.

Product Review: Good Scale
Summary: 5 Stars

Received the scale in December and have been using it for at least 3 weeks.
The scale switches on very easy when you lightly tap on the scale with your foot - (only one tap required). It also weighs pretty quickly and consistant. The setup for the different users are easy to do. The start-up to weigh yourself and get the other perks take a little longer than if you just want your weight. We don't use that option daily, but intend to use it on a weekly basis. Just weighing yourself is easy and quick. My wife loves the scale. Yes be careful when you get on.... you have to stand on the metal contacts, that way you don't have a possibility that the scale will tip over.

Product Review: Good Scale
Summary: 4 Stars

I received this item in the mail about a week ago so I can't tell you how long it will last but I can tell you the immediate cons and pros.
Cons:
Pieces were missing (Black things on the bottom, there was only two)
There was small glitches (Wouldn't work like it said on the directions: It said just tap your foot on the scale and it will show lbs and it wouldn't even do that.. you have to push the buttons)
Noticeable scratches were all over.
For heavy people, it's kind of small but it's like almost the same size as every other scale but my other one is bigger.
I drink a lot of water and I am almost positive that the water and fat percentages are off by a lot. (I have three different scales and the other two are more similar than this one.. it's way off)

Pros:
It's pretty and it works sufficient for the price.
There's batteries in it!
It holds a lot of weight unlike a non-digital scale.
It will even weigh your cat! My other scales will not go that low.
It holds up to ten different people information but I forgot, here's another con.. it will not memorize it or put it in memory of what your weight/water/fat was. (Which was a big con for me.. sorry I forgot to put that.)

Well, overall, if you don't want a superb scale worth more and your okay with the above for the price than it's a good scale!
