Product Reviews of Equate Stay Awake Alertness Aid with Caffeine, Maximum Strength Tablets, 80-Count (Pack of 2)

Product Review: Don't spend more.
Summary: 5 Stars

I used Vivarin and No-Doz for a couple of years before realizing I could get the same thing much, much cheaper. I've owned these for two months now, and I actually prefer these over the big name brands--the low cost is just the icing on the cake.

Product Review: Know your Caffeine Tolerance
Summary: 3 Stars

If you are looking into using caffeine pills, educate yourself first about how many milligrams of caffeine you are used to tolerating. Health Canada recommends a daily dose of 2.5 mg/kg for people 13 years and older. Albeit a more conservative recommendation, this is something to be aware of as you are searching for the appropriate dose [For those doing the math, 200 mg would be for someone around 175 pounds] (Source: [...]).

Try to look up the amount of caffeine the beverages and food you consume by doing a quick Google search. MayoClinic offers a list of a few caffeinated products: [...]. For those thinking of buying Stay Awake to save money and halving the tablets, be aware that it has been shown through research that pill splitting is not recommended by the FDA unless specifically recommended for the packaging (Source: [...]).

Educating yourself about your caffeine tolerance will help you ultimately purchase the proper dose to help you stay awake. There is indeed tolerance which develops with these alertness aids, so try to use them sparingly and (if at all possible) try to add more exercise and sleep into your daily routine to help increase your alertness and maintain your health throughout the day.

Product Review: Loses Effectiveness
Summary: 3 Stars

I drink one or two Cokes a day, so I worried about two things buying this: 1) that it wouldn't work because I am accustomed to caffeine, and 2) that eventually my tolerance would build such that I'd need to take more and more pills to get an effect. Basically, the latter seems to be the case. The first few times I took a pill, they worked well but also made my stomach ache and caused trips to the restroom. Being that I needed these to stay awake or feel less tired at work, it's not really the time to have an upset stomach nor the place you want to smell up the restroom. Working an 8-hr shift, I needed to take two of these, approximately one every four hours, and would start feeling as tired as or more tired than I did prior to taking it between 3-4 hours after taking a pill. So they don't last that long.

Second, after about two seperate days of the pills working but making me feel sick, the stomache aches/restroom trips went away...but so did some of the effectiveness of the pills. I had tried Five-Hour Energy drink before these pills, and the exact same thing happened, i.e. worked the first few times but made me sick, then neither worked that great nor made me sick. With neither the drink nor the pills have I used them more than 3 days a week, and the drink was actually less than that. The pills do still seem to work, but now it's as if I need two at once to get an effect and it either doesn't last long or my tiredness level is up and down during a 4-hr stretch. This is regardless of whether I eat with the pill or even regardless of having drank some Coke within a few hours of the pill(s). The past couple times I've used the pills to get through night shifts at work, I have felt pretty sleepy regardless of taking the pills with, like I said, varying levels of tiredness. And they now seem to work best when I take one upon waking up as opposed to when it's late and I need to stay awake. Another side effect of the pills, for me, has been smelling blood in my nasal passages and even some coming out on the kleenex when blowing my nose, especially after the first few times taking the pills.
--
Conclusion: they seem to work fine in the beginning, but you might experience some side effects and may end up needing to take more and more just to get the same effect as before.

Product Review: Was in pain and vomiting, now I feel great!
Summary: 5 Stars

I very sometimes get severe headaches/migraines (I don't know, I'm not a doctor), but when I do I'm vomiting and in pain.

Once as a child once I was given fiorinal for one severe episode. It worked in less than ten minutes. That's a prescription medicine with aspirin + caffeine + a barbituate. Apparently, for me the key ingredient was caffeine. Caffeine fixes me right up. My headaches are not from caffeine withdrawal, caffeine just works on them.

No two people's head issues are the same, so I'm not saying this will work for everyone (it doesn't really seem to help my boyfriend's headaches much), but it's certainly worth a try as it works much better than pain killers for some people. Also, I'm not a doctor, so when in doubt ask one. :-)
