Product Reviews of ENT Diagnostic Kit - 3.25V Otoscope, Ophthalmoscope, E.N.T Diagnostic Kit

Product Review: Very Nice for the price
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a very nice diagnostic kit for the price I paid. The otoscope is very bright and I can see the eardrum as clearly with it as I can with my roommates Welch Allen model otoscope. It is very well constructed and has a tight look and feel. It also comes with a glass lens compared to the acrylic one on my roommates welch allen. The expandable nasal speculum and laryngeal mirrors are a nice plus for looking into the nose and throat. This kit comes with a metal tongue depressor, I am not sure what is up with that since I can not imagine sterilizing this between uses nor using it without sterilizing it with each new patient. Again no biggy since wooden disposable tongue depressors seem to always be available. The ophthalmoscope is just ok but I basically only needed the kit to practice with and get through my physical diagnosis class so I am not that worried about it not being equal in quality to a Welch Allen especially considering the price difference between our kits. His set him back almost $500. I figured I can buy a more expensive ophthalmoscoep later if I need to after I am done with school and making a good income. Actually I am wondering if I will ever be making a good income if they socialize medicine but that is a different topic for a different day.
Bottom line is that you will not go wrong with this kit when considering the price. I figure I can always sell it on eBay for 100 bucks after I am done with my PD class if money gets tight before I get out of school.

Product Review: Very happy with my purchase of this 3.2V ENT diagnotic kit
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been very happy with my purchase. I was pleasantly surprised with how well built and sturdy the diagnostic instruments were in this kit considering it's inexpensive price. I initially was going to purchase a Welch Allyn Kit to replace one from my Med School days and had no clue any other less expensive ones were even available. I did a search on otoscopes diagnostic kits and found this model on Amazon. I find the otosocpe to work every bit as well as my old Welch Allyn. The 3.2Volt halogen light is very bright and the view of the tympanic membrane very clear. The ophthalmoscope is not quite the quality of my Welch Allyn but I have found in my practice I rarely use it for anything more than checking the pupil and cornea since I do not routinely pharmacologically dilate pupils in my office practice as a family practitioner. The expandable nasal speculum is a nice addition as well as the bent arm transilluminator for doing exams of the oro-pharynx. My old Welch Allyn kit did not have these instrument heads. Overall I consider this kit to be an excellent value and a nice addition to my Family Practice office.

Product Review: Very impressive professional quality otoscope
Summary: 5 Stars

I was very impressed how nice this otoscope was for the money I spent on it. I work for a pediatrician as a nurse and I showed it to him. He was also impressed and bought one as well. He said it was as nice as the one he paid over $350 for when he was in med school. The light is very bright and the lens works really well to give you a very clear picture of the eardrum.

Product Review: good basic kit
Summary: 4 Stars

Good for beginners. You'll be able to see most of what you need to see with this kit. The flashlight is a little weaker than I've seen on a few other kits, and there are no other light options for the ophthalmoscope attachment (cross-hairs, slit, wide view). For the money, I'd say its a pretty good deal though.

Product Review: you get what you pay for
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this for medical school. It lacks any bells and whistles, despite a few attachments I find useless, but I don't care about that. While it basically works, I have some complaints that have led me to look for a new model.

1.) The plastic tips for the otoscope include a single reusable one and a small tube of disposable plastic ones. The reusable one is OK, except for being somewhat flimsy in attachment. But who wants to worry about cleaning and sterilizing it between each patient? The disposable ones are worse, borderline unusable. They do not attach to the otoscope themselves, rather they can only be fit over the reusable one. However, they were not designed for this, so the fit is poor - it is both very loose and prone to falling off, and forces a deeper insertion of the tip to visualize the eardrum (to the point of being uncomfortable).

2.) The opthalmoscope works only on large pupils. In those with naturally large pupils, or those whose pupils have been dilated, visualization is fine. Slightly lower quality than more expensive models, but fine. However, with those with smaller pupils (more than half of those I tried this with), the light and optics are slightly too offset, resulting in lack of illumination, and staring at a black retina. Yes, the light is on the pupil, but the illuminated portion of the retina is not visible, the only portion of the retina I can see is black. To compare, I switched between this product another manufacturer's model, and I did not have this problem with the other model. In the words of the ophthalmologist who taught me the exam "that model is crap".

On the plus side, it sort of works for some purposes some of the time.
