Product Review: Pretty Good -- Good Value
Summary: 3 Stars

I eat a protein bar every day as a mid morning snack. I used to get Slimfast, but they fired Whoopee Goldberg for speaking her mind, so I boycott them. Then we would buy Genisoy. We loved them and Luna Bars (eventhough we're both guys) and Balance Bars (which can taste a bit like a chocolate vitamin)...but those can get expensive. These days we settle on granola bars without so much High Fructose Corn Syrup in them. I tell you all of that so you know that we have tried a lot of different brands.

Dr Melina's bars are good but not great. For taste, I'd say think of fruit loops--or maybe a store-brand-knock-off. They can be a little grainy, but for the most part the texture is good, interesting to your mouth. You really feel like you have had a snack but they don't break your jaw (try eating a chilled Genisoy bar--ouchies!). You can check the specs for nutrition. They compare favorably. However they DO have palm kernal oil & that's not the healthiest thing you can eat. My partner is a total vegetarian and he appreciated the high protien & low carb.

Bottom line: good value & taste for the price.

Being a person who is healthy, a bit under weight and works out regularly I'm not really a huge fan of protein bars - on a regular basis anyhow. I found this to be fruity but not too sweet and with a nice consistency to it as far as being crunchy and not mushy. I did find that it made me feel a bit nauseous after eating it so perhaps eating 1/2 the bar would have been better for me in the long run. I'm not a big snacker in between meals but I will be sure to carry this in my car as a quick treat if I just need a boost of energy to be able to keep up with my three children!

Product Review: Protein Bars with a Nice Pleasant Taste
Summary: 4 Stars

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Dr. Melina protein bars, lemon raspberry flavored, provide a nice alternative to other protein bars on the market today. Each bar, at 1.58 ounces, is 14 grams of protein, 5 grams of fiber and only 180 calories. Better yet, they taste good. The lemon raspberry bars have a nice lemon taste, not too overwhelming, with a good balance of raspberry thrown in for good measure. Perfect as breakfast on the go or as an afternoon snack, Dr. Melina's bars offer good taste with less fat of some of the more traditional power/protein bars.

Product Review: Quite tasty but not impressive nutrition

Not only have I sampled these bars, but I've had a few friends try them, and my daughter loves them. The flavor is more lemony than raspberry, and they are a bit sweet for my taste, but there is none of the bitter or chemical aftertaste that one often experiences with nutrition bars. If I were to compare them, the flavor is similar to the Luna lemon bars.

While they don't taste bad, these don't have all the nutrition that I would like to see. The 5 grams of fiber is good, but not great. I was disappointed that the first listed ingredient is "Syrup Blend (brown rice syrup, cane juice invert)". The way I read it: sugar. In fact, the ingredients all appear highly processed and quite fatty with things like "fractionated plam kernel oil" -- which sounds like a trans-fat to me, although it lists zero grams. Sugar appears under various guises in the "syrup, the "coating" and in other locations.

I think you can get a better, healthier bang for your buck, but if you need to grab something, these don't taste bad and are better than some.

Product Review: Raspberry is a Perk

To tell you the truth, I am not qualified to write a review on protein bars, whereas I have limited experience with them, but coming from someone who wants to start a workout schedule, and needs energy to do so, I want get better acquainted with them. Here is my take. First off, I like raspberry. It has that uncommon feature as being full flavored, even in small quantities. Blending it with a hint of what I consider to be lemon zest, because it reminds me of a twist of the lemon skin, rather the juice.
Knowing I needed help with this one, I went to a friend of mine, who I consider a protein bar fanatic. Every time we go out to eat, he eats 2 of them before his meal. (He lifts weights a lot) Since he tries them all, I gave him one, and asked for his comments. What he said was, "It has more flavor than most of the other bars. Some other bars have a chalky flavor, at least a significant amount of them do, and this one isn't chalky at all. He especially liked the crispy things on the top. It is sweeter than the rest, even though it only has 180 calories." Then I asked him if he would buy one, and he replied, "Definitely, I like the flavor a lot"

I noticed, by looking at how it is put together, it has a cream colored bottom layer, topped with a thin coat of rasberry; just enough for full flavor, but light enough to not dominate. Then the top has crispies all over it.
One other thing is that I looked up a run off of the top 10 bars, and universally the run off was rated by which ones had the most amount of flavor, and yet light on calories. This one falls right in line with that philosoply, and has an ingredient level in keeping with the ones that were better rated.
Like I said, "I am not a protein bar expert, but now that I have really gotten a chance to eat these, I've acquired a taste for them. I'm finishing a fitness room up in the basement, and will soon be working out on a regular basis, and felt like I needed an energy boost at workout time. I wouldn't hesitate to get more of these.
