Product Reviews of DivaCup Model 2 Post-ChildbirthProduct Review: Far Better Than Tampons or Pads! Summary: 5 Stars
I have been using the Diva Cup for about two years and think it is an awesome alternative to pads and tampons. The big thing is that there is no smell as there is with a pad (even if you change the pad frequently) and less maintenance (changing). The Diva takes a little getting used to and I did feel some pressure internally when I first started using it. This could have been though that it was cold when I initially inserted it and this can be remedied by holding it under warm water. The other thing I occasionally notice is the stem poking me, but again this can be fixed by inserting it correctly or trimming the stem.
Perhaps 2-3 times I have inserted it incorrectly and had total leakage, but then leaking 2-3 times over the course of two years is a lot better than the frequent leaks I had with tampons and pads and it was my fault for not putting it in right. Insertion and removal is quite simple with a little practice. Though after reading one of the reviews for the #1 size, it seems some women may have a little more of a challenge. Perhaps the difference is angle or having previously given birth. It might be a lot easier for those of us who have had a vaginal birth?
The Diva is awesome in that it can be worn several hours. I clean and insert it in the morning and 12 hours later I clean and reinsert it for the night. Cleaning is easy since you just pour the contents in the toilet and then rinse it and clean the holes in the sink. Because of the long wearing time, I can always empty and clean it at home. I don't know about most people, but the thought of using a public sink after some stranger who just cleaned their Diva Cup in it totally grosses me out! A spare would be a good idea for anyone who "must" empty it in public. Carry the spare in a ziploc bag and then empty the full cup in the toilet, wipe it with tissue and put it in the ziploc to wash at home (PLEASE!) Don't wash it in a public sink; icky, icky, icky!
Something I bought at the same time as the Diva Cup is a Mini Shower. It is a little sprayer that attaches to the incoming water line on your toilet. It is great for using during your menstrual cycle and for using everytime you go to the bathroom. Our whole family uses it; great especially for cleaning my little one. Though the cold water in the winter causes something similar to brain-freeze ;) Since there is often a bit of residual blood after you insert the Diva Cup, the Mini Shower is perfect for cleaning the vaginal area before wiping dry. Less spotted panties or panty liners!
There is a similar product I bought a while ago called InStead. Unlike the Diva, they are disposable and can be purchased at [...](at least they could a year or so ago). I forgot my Diva Cup during a trip and had to buy something else. InStead has a flexible ring (reminds me of the rubber bracelets everyone wears) with a soft bag attached to it. The ring is much wider than the top of the Diva and I did not feel as secure with it in. It did work however. I think the Diva is better however since it is not disposable like the InStead (no ongoing expense) or impact on the environment. The InStead is more compact than the Diva and they are individually wrapped, so it makes a good emergency carry in your purse if you aren't into carrying the Diva. Though I believe God intended for us to take some time off during our periods, one advantage of the InStead over the Diva is you can have non-messy intercourse with it inserted. I can't recommend doing so first hand, but I read it was possible.
For convenience I will be purchasing another Diva Cup. Though I haven't read that it is necessary, I would prefer sterilizing it in boiling water before each use rather than just cleaning it under running water. Having two would make that easier. Though I paid quite a bit more two years ago, I have recently found the Diva Cup online for under twenty dollars, which is a really great price.
In spite of the good track record with the Diva Cup, I still wear a panty liner with it for added peace of mind when I leave the house. However, the Diva Cup just can't be beat for handling the menstrual cycle. With a pad you have to deal with the messy part of your period all day (changing, seeing, smelling and that uncomfortable feeling), but with the Diva Cup dealing with the messy part can be as little as twice a day. So much easier and so much cleaner. I find the Diva Cup to be a better choice over pads, tampons, or the InStead cup.
Product Review: Finally--a good period! Summary: 5 Stars
I was at my wits end trying to deal with certain times during my period when I would have sudden and unexpected flooding. I was losing sleep at night worrying about accidents and running to the bathroom every hour when out, hoping to avert a problem. I just had my first period with the DivaCup and I feel like it's the answer to my prayers. Easy to put in and take out, easy to clean. No messes like with Instead. It feels cleaner and healthier than a tampon. Another plus--I don't know if it's just my imagination, but I seemed to have way fewer cramps.
Product Review: Friendly for the earth, my budget, and my panties! Summary: 5 Stars
I have been using a Diva cup for almost a year now, and I love it! The first cycle, I had to learn proper insertion. I recommend inserting the cup while squatting in the shower, if you are having difficulties standing. I wear mine all day, then shower, wash it, reinsert, and wear it all night. There is no odor, virtually no leaking, and I don't get the terrible cramps I used to experience with tampons (yes, even organic tampons). Also, my period sometimes will come back after it seems to have left, but with the Diva cup, I just wear it an extra day after my flow seems to have stemmed, and all is fine since it is not toxic to wear when there is no flow. The cup paid for itself after about 3 cycles, and I love that I am no longer taking space in landfills with my pads.
The flip side: Due to my vigilance with Kegels and resulting, um, limited vaginal capacity, I should have gone with the smaller model for women who have not had children. This one is a bit too wide. I have to do a little shimmy to get it to open up after I insert it, otherwise it will just stay completely flat and not hold anything; this only happened once when my son was banging on the bathroom door and I didn't give it those few seconds it needed - that was the only time it ever leaked, and was easily remedied. To take the cup out, I just push it out, then squeeze the bottom of the cup to let out the air and remove it instead of trying to pull it out with my fingers (there is no room for this thing and my fingers). The suction is a little unnerving at first, but it seems to be ok, no damage done after all this time...my periods are about a day shorter as a result, yay for that!
Anyway, I highly recommend this product for any menstruating woman. Diva cups rock!
Product Review: Give it a chance Summary: 5 Stars
The Diva Cup is awesome, but give yourself plenty of time to put it in and take it out the first couple of times. It took me 3 tries on 3 different periods before I got the diva cup in successfully. Also, the first time I tried to take it out I was almost late for work because it took so long. However, now that I'm used to it there is never a problem. There is no discomfort while I'm wearing it, and I've never had a leak, which is more than I can say for any other product, including "Instead" the disposable feminine cup (though Instead is nice in a pinch and a good way to work up to the diva cup if you are unsure about the whole concept of an internal cup -- Instead is engineered totally differently but works similarly).
