Product Reviews of Dial Corporation 5.5Oz Fels Naptha Laundry Bar 723154

Product Review: Works okay I guess, but warning:
Summary: 3 Stars

This came from Wikipedia's website, so all of you who have asthma or mentioned the chemical smell, here's why:
==============================================

While sometimes also sold next to personal-care body soaps it should not be used as an overall body soap or regular laundry additive since it contains Stoddard solvent, a skin and eye irritant.

According to the "Chronic Health Effects" section of the National Institutes of Health's MSDS for Fels Naptha:

Chronic toxicity testing has not been conducted on this product. However, the following effects have been reported on one of the product's components. Stoddard solvent: Repeated or prolonged exposure to high concentrations has resulted in upper respiratory tract irritation, central and peripheral nervous system effects, and possibly hematopoetic, liver and kidney effects.

Stoddard solvent is another name for mineral spirits, which are, like petroleum distillates, a mixture of multiple chemicals made from petroleum. Exposure to Stoddard solvent in the air can affect your nervous system and cause dizziness, headaches, or a prolonged reaction time. It can also cause eye, skin, or throat irritation.

It should be noted that using Fels-Naptha as a punishment for foul language is considered highly dangerous.

So there you go. Careful with this stuff. As a cleaner, I couldn't see that it works any better (or worse) than Spray-n-Wash. And since I'm one of those people who happen to like the light scents of detergents more than the chemical smell (and all the scents are for is to disguise the chemical smell; otherwise they'd all smell bad)... I just use detergent. This stuff is not *choke* "natural" like, say, vinegar. If you are going to use this as laundry cleaner exclusively (rather than stain remover), don't use hot water or you'll get it in your lungs. You might consider using Downey to cover the stench, as well.

I am willing to try it for small areas of poison ivy, if I ever get it. We use "Ivy Block" which prevents poison ivy/oak/sumac rashes, so I doubt I'll ever get to try it for that.

... that when the job is tough, this is the soap to use, on the principle that 'nasty' drives out 'nasty.' The smell and feel of this stuff, and even the color, hauls me back to childhood like the odor of madeleines transported Marcel Proust... and I'll bet you never expected THAT simile, did you?

I didn't really expect to find Fels Naptha for sale in the cyber arcades, but here it is. I searched for it just to recommend using it as an antidote to poison oak/ivy. Unless you've scratched the skin enough to see blood, it will wash away the allergenic resin even three or four hours after contact. And whaddya know, a previous reviewer has already offered the same testimonial. Well, let's see... Baseball moms! This is the soap to use for both grass stains and pine tar on your kids' unis!

Now if I only had stock in the company....

Product Review: Trying to make liquid soup for laundering
Summary: 2 Stars

I bought this hope only in the hopes of saving money by making my own laundry soap and mixing it with Arm and Hammer Washing Soda, but the process turned out to be more expensive, more time comsuming and just not worth it. I haven't tried the soap by itself yet.

Product Review: works, but isnt natural
Summary: 3 Stars

i used to use fels naptha to make my laundry soap, but i am sure they changed the recipe. when i started up again 2 years ago i noticed that it smells like chemicals. the ingredients list is not very specific but doesn't look natural. it works well if you can get around the scent but whats the point of making your own soap if it is just as full of chemicals as the storebought? (well i guess there is still price.)

i switched to using castille soap, it works well enough but not as good as fels naptha. i am trying to find natural soap brands to work with.

fyi, if you make your own laundry soap, dont forget to add "bluing" to your white loads. its harder and harder to find but makes whites whiter (its why laundry detergent is blue.) oxobrite peroxide bleach also really helps if you add it to each load.

Product Review: Detergent
Summary: 5 Stars

I am going to make my own detergent, so this is a great way to get a hard to find item - order from Amazon.
