Product Reviews of "Derby Extra" Stainless Steel Double Edge Razor BladesProduct Review: Awesome Blades at an Awesome Value Summary: 5 Stars
This review is intended for anyone who is on the fence about safety razor shaving. Make the switch, you will not regret it. I just logged in to Amazon to buy another 100 count box of these Derby blades, and it showed me the last time I had purchased the product. November 2008. Two years ago. That means that in the last two years, I have spent under ten bucks for razor blades. I shave about 3-4 times per week, and I am able to get that out of one blade. That means that I consistently use one of these blades each week. You will not find a better value for your money. It is true that there is a start-up cost for safety razor shaving. You will spend approximately $30 to buy the razor, another $30 to buy a good brush, and then about $20 to get a good tub of shaving cream, which should (if you buy a good kind like Taylor of Old Bond Street, or even the Body Shop Men's shaving cream which I recently discovered) last you for a year. Therefore, your total cost for your first year of shaving is $90, and that is assuming that you are much hairier than I am and you go through two of these blades each week. After the first year, you can plan to spend about $30 each year after that. You never have to buy another razor or brush, just cream and blades. Price out the Fusion or Mach 3 blades, even from an online retailer, and you will see that you cannot even come close to that price point.
As for the actual shaving, yes you will have some knicks and cuts for the first week or so. But once you get a feel for the razor, and you start letting it glide across your face rather than forcing it, you will love the shave you get. I hate the ads that talk about more passes causing more irritation. That is true if you are digging the blade into your face, but if you are letting the blade work for you, and getting a heavy lather of good glycerin-based shaving cream, more passes just makes your face smoother, and does not cause more irritation.
Anyway, if you are on the fence, take the plunge. The worst that can happen is that you drop $90, hate the quality of your shaves (even after giving it a good try) and go back to your old razor. Even if you do that, which you won't, you can still get a better shave using the brush and cream, so you've really only wasted $40 for the razor and blades. And that $40 would have only bought you about 15 of the new razor cartridges. Give it a try, you won't regret it.
Oh, and I have experience with both these Derby blades and the more expensive Merkur variety. I prefer the Derby myself because they seem to be the perfect sharpness right off the bat. With the Merkurs, it almost seems like you have to dull them a bit before your first shave. That's just personal preference though. Both are much cheaper than normal cartridge shaving.
Product Review: Best I've used so far Summary: 5 Stars
I'm impressed with these blades. I had been using wal-mart brand and there's really no comparison.
I actually had to look to tell that these were cutting my beard when I used them the first time. I feel like i "wipe" the hair off instead of cut it. I get about 4-5 uses per blade. They last longer than my Mach 3 blades, work better, and are way cheaper. I'll never go back.
Product Review: Best price yet Summary: 5 Stars
Derby blades rock! This price is ridiculous. I get 5 nice shaves from a Derby so that comes to $0.015 a shave! That's an incredible value. Some people don't like the Derbys but I've got 3 years' worth stockpiled for the shavepocalypse!
Product Review: Better shave, better price Summary: 5 Stars
My previous shaving experiences consisted of an electric razor, and using mach3 cartridge razors.
I was growing unsatisfied with the poor quality of the shave the cartridge razor was giving me, and how expensive it was to replace the blades on an electric razor or cartridge razor. I decided to take the plunge and use an old fashioned double edge safety razor.
Ever since early 2009, I have been using the Derby Extra razor blades, a merkur long handled razor, and the proraso eucalyptus oil shaving cream, and the difference is amazing. I receive much closer shaves, with far fewer ingrown hairs, and an almost complete disappearance of razor burns and razor bumps.
I feel these blades are fairly optimal. They aren't the sharpest, but then I haven't cut myself with them yet either. They do good work. I don't have a really heavy beard - one box of 100 lasted me from Feb 2009 to Oct 2010. And the savings in money is extremely high. I got 18 months of razor blades for the same price as one box of mach 3 cartridges.
Product Review: Better than Merkur Summary: 5 Stars
I use these blades with Merkur Heavy Duty. In my opinion these blades are better and cheaper than the original Merkur blades.
