This filter ruined my humidifier which had worked perfectly without it. Here is what happened to me. The humidifier, with filter in place, had been running for a couple of days when I noticed an odd smell upon entering the room. I determined it was coming from the humidifier, so I unplugged it and removed the water tank to take a look. To my shock, the bottom on the humidifier was filled with the amber colored pellets that once were inside the filter. The pellets filled up the area that should have been filled with water. The reservoir had water in it and the unit continued to run, but was overheating because the water wasn't able to flow. The heat damaged (melted) the nebulizer black ring so that the water just leaks right through the bottom now. I am glad that I found out before it caused a fire. I put this in to help filter the "ickyness" out of the water. My husband and I were very concerned when we saw that our son's nose was covered in brown boogers one morning. That was until I looked at the humidifier and discovered it was full of brown water. We had just put the filter in the night before and apparently over night it had turned the water brown and so the mist in the room was brown water. Yuck! I used Homes humidifier, but we throw to garbage box after use a few weeks. But this one is very good, especially small size room like our apartment. So far we do not have problem except it is very sensitive to put the sensor in right position, otherwise bother the flushing.Product Review: Crane humidifier filter - not worth it

We have hard water in our house, so I thought this filter would help, but, in fact, it made things worse... every time we added water to the humidifier, we noticed that the plastic was orange and slimy. Now that we've removed the filter, we don't have this problem. Maybe it works better with soft water.
