Product Review: Awful smelling mist; cleaning with bleach solution doesn't help
Summary: 1 Stars

I was excited to see such a cute design at a great price; unfortunately the reality is disappointing. Like many of these kinds of devices from China (air conditioners come to mind), there is an awful chemical smell that persists through multiple cleanings. At first I thought the smell came from the basin or tank, but after thoroughly and repeatedly cleaning these areas with a bleach solution to no effect, I realized the smell is coming from the fan area -- you can't clean that part, so you're stuck. If you have a keen sense of smell, stay far away. Even if you don't, you might want to look elsewhere -- goodness knows what is being mixed into the mist that's filling the room...

Product Review: BUY THE PENGUIN! If I could give 6 stars, I would.
Summary: 5 Stars

Where do I begin? He is so essential to my life that he is not "the humidifier," but "The Penguin."

I've had mine for well over two years, and still he works perfectly. I second every positive comment re. ease-of-use, ease to clean, quietness, reliability and functionality.

This is DEFINITELY the cleanest humidifier I've ever owned and least likely to generate calcification. I have no idea why--in my locale, the water is quite hard.

I love this guy so much, I've bought one for my grandmother, one for my mother, and have URGED (not just a recommendation) several people to buy one. This includes my brother, whose daughter has asthma.

WHY THE PENGUIN: His head rotates. I.e., you can change the direction of the vapor. I bought the elephant for my grandmother, not thinking about the benefit of the penguin's rotating head. Of course, as you can tell from pictures, the elephant's trunk doesn't move. For my mother's I specifically wanted to get a frog or other round-headed animal. But when I tested them, the vapor opening did NOT rotate! So far, the penguin is the only rotating opening I have seen. Being able to slightly adjust the direction of the vapor w/o moving the entire apparatus is KEY. I cannot emphasize this enough. I am not sure if this asset was just coincidental of the design--it appears to be--but it was a brilliant inadvertent move! I wound up buying a penguin for my mom, who was really ill at the time, and my father, who hardly praises anything, said, "Deb, you really bought a good humidifier."

Not to mention it is cute as heck, and never makes a bedroom look like an infirmary.

ALSO, I love how the design is virtually airtight. Mine has NOT ONCE (in 2+ years) smelled acrid or grown any type of mold. I clean mine with a bit of bleach (per instructions) 2 to 3 times per month (less regularly than instructions), but it NEVER gets "gross." I've had several other humidifiers that accumulate dust, grow mold, smell sour, calcify beyond repair--you name it. This one has given me NONE of these problems.

I am ridiculously passionate about how awesome this penguin is. Do yourself a favor and stop shopping. Just get the darned penguin. :)

Product Review: Bad smell is a deal-breaker
Summary: 1 Stars

As several other reviewers have noted, these humidifiers can produce a chemical smell which does not seem safe for children (or anybody).

I bought the Elephant model at a big box store in Manhattan for our 3-year old's room. Seemed to work great the first night. But on day 2 after running it during naptime, a strong chemical odor almost like mothballs built-up in the room. After rinsing, drying and restarting a couple times, I realized the smell was not coming from the water tank or nebulizer, but from the fan in the bottom of the unit, which is not accessible. So I thought maybe I got a bad unit and went to exchange it at the store, but then I noticed the display model was also making the smell so I just returned my humidifier.

The smell is pretty subtle and you might not notice it at first unless you stick your nose directly in the mist. But it builds-up in a closed room and is very unpleasant. Maybe there is a bad batch of the machines right now, but another reviewer in Northern Cali had the same issue so it seems pretty widespread.

Product Review: Been in constant use since November - A+
Summary: 4 Stars

I've burned through a few humidifiers in my time, and this one is lasting really well. The directional spout is great, and I've cleaned the unit twice with a bit of listerine dilution in warm water just to be safe during the cold/flu season. It's easy to fill and the mist selection is very sensitive - I use it full blast during the day when some windows are open and low at night when we're closed in.
One thing to be careful of - have clean hands when you fill it, because the bottom face can become contaminated and then you'll have to clean the base out.
Cute and well designed, and durable!

Product Review: Best Humidifier I've owned!
Summary: 5 Stars

We've gone through many humidifiers over the years and most don't last more than a season. We got this one when our son was born in 2008. It is by far the best we've owned! VERY quiet with lots of output and a nice large tank. We use it all winter and whenever he's got a cold. Cleaning and maintenance have been easy.

I loved the Crane humidifier so much that we bought the smaller capacity tear drop shaped one Crane 2.3 Gallon COOL Mist humidifier for our bedroom. It works just as well as the Penguin and just as quietly! 2 years later it's still going strong and I have recommended these humidifiers to friends and family ever since.
