I have had this Crane humidifier (elephant style) for my children for 9 months now, running it around the clock every day, turning it off only to rinse/clean it. I am very pleased with the humidifier and am surprised by the complaints others have made (it makes me wonder if some of the reviews involve user error).
We use the optional additional filters to prevent white dust from the water (these filters are sold separately for about $8.99) and although they are supposed to be replaced 1x/month, we use them each for 2 months and haven't had problems doing so. We also rinse the bowl and reservoir out nightly (no scrubbing or cleaning products, just rinsing with water). Once a week we add a little bit of white vinegar combined with water and let that sit (humidifier turned off) for 20 mins before rinsing. These are basic and very quick maintenance tips that keep our humidier working very well! (There's a great how-to video on cleaning these units that you can find online from Crane. We just follow their instructions.)
Regarding moisture output, I've found that if you adjust the moisture dial appropriately, the humidifier is very effective. It's not tricky, but you do have to look at the steam output. If you see the droplets falling down through the air, it's turned up too high and the humidity in the room can't absorb that much more moisture. So, turn the dial so that you can see the steam blowing up into the air but stop as soon as you see the droplets start falling down.
In general my family and I are very pleased with this humidifier and would certainly recommend it to anyone! It keeps our nursery humidity just perfect and is cute in the process. My suggestion, though? READ THE INSTRUCTIONS or watch the videos online. Maintenance is very simple, but you do need to know how to keep it clean and use it properly. Also, this needs to sit on a table or other hard surface up off the floor - it says so on the unit itself, and in the materials and videos. (anyone who found this out the hard way just didn't pay attention.)

Important Tips
If you have a lot of minerals in your tap water, it is recommended to use distilled water, filtered water, or a Crane demineralization filter (HS-1932). Place humidifier on an elevated surface and not on carpet, towel, or sensitive wood furniture.
Cleaning and Storage
Frequently cleaning your humidifier is very important. Crane recommends emptying the water in the basin daily, making sure you pour away from the fan air-outlet. Disinfect the water basin and tank weekly by using a white vinegar and fresh water solution, let sit for 30 minutes, then rinse. For convenience, the Crane Descaler solution HS-1933 is also available. It is important to disinfect and dry completely before storage.
