Customer Review: Give it time to show its faults

I was impressed by the appearance of this bench, and I ordered one. It looked as good in the flesh as it did in the picture, so I was pleased, although it struck me as wobbly because there's no bracing anywhere.
A year or a little more later and we noticed rust stains on the shower tile floor. I couldn't believe it because the tubing legs are aluminum, and the ends are rubber. Well, turned it upside-down and took a closer look. The washers between the bolt ends and the aluminum tubing were rusted! That's nice: Stainless steel or aluminum would have cost a few pennies more.
Then I removed one of the rubber feet. Inside, it was filled with gelatinous soap-scum, a little hair, and rusty water. I turned the rubber foot over, and there was a hole molded in the bottom (all four of them have holes). Well, that's probably by design since, with all the extra holes in the sides of the legs, water's gonna get in, so it's got to be let out.
I set out to clean the hair and soap scum out of the rubber foot, and I used a small screwdriver to help. Then, I noticed that the bottom of the inside of the foot was very hard (harder than rubber), and it was rusted. It was steel! My guess is that they lined the inside of the feet with steel washer-like thingees to prevent the sharp ends of the aluminum tubing from, over time, gnawing through the rubber feet.
Now, looking for a replacement bench (I need one), I look at the proportion that use the same kind of aluminum tubing for legs, and I get cautious.
Finally, after a year or more, the sealer finish is starting to wear through. Couldn't they afford a little varnish?
