Product Reviews of Cold Steel Irish Blackthorn Walking Stick with Polypropylene, 37-InchProduct Review: Exactly What I Was Looking For Summary: 5 Stars
Getting up in years with a bad back, I was looking for a walking stick that could also double as a self-defense tool.
The Cold Steel Irish Blackthorn Walking Stick meets my needs perfectly. Its 37-inch length and the polypropylene material it is made out of is exactly what I was looking for.
From even a short distance, it is a smart-looking walking stick and I will assume it looks tough enough to make most "bad guys" think twice before trying anything smart. Hopefully, I will never have to put that to the test, but at least now I have a "fighting" chance.
The knob handle is rather large and, though it fits my hand perfectly, I will acknowledge that people with unusually large or small hands may want to go with a Cold Steel walking stick that has a smaller or larger knob or stay with a simple cane.
This stick makes a great addition to the Cold Steel training DVD, Stun Stagger Stop, which I also own that teaches fighting with canes and sticks.
One closing caveat already mentioned: I would strongly recommend a cane tip which can be bought almost anywhere. My local stores did not carry the size tip required (1 inch in diameter) so I purchased for less than $3 four plastic tips for chair legs which does the job perfectly.
Product Review: Fair Stick Summary: 3 Stars
I have a back problem that sometimes requires me to use a cane for balance, and I also like to have a hiking stick with me when I go for long walks at night. I purchased this lately since I was a fan of the Cold Steel African walking stick, but preferred the blackthorn style. It's a very nice look stick/cane. It has a great feel to it, and is actually more practical than a real blackthorn stick which can splinter or still has the sharp thorns on it.
The lip on the knob of the stick makes for a great grip. The downfall is the plastic wood that is also used on the root. It's the same type of wood used for the wood trim in a car, and can crack easily if dropped. I think the company would have been much better off to use the same polypropylene that is used for the shaft of the stick, only in brown for the root. It would still look just as authentic, but have a better durability.
The plastic "wood" and lack of a rubber tip (which I was easily able to purchase at a drug store) loose the blackthorn some points.
Product Review: Gentlemen of Distinction Summary: 5 Stars
I am more than pleased with this walking stick. It is of excellent quality and has a great feel! Any gentleman of distinction who desires good taste and uniqueness will be well pleased indeed!
Product Review: Great Stick for multiple applications with a modification Summary: 5 Stars
PROS:
Great for hiking, walking, checking the mail at night, personal defense, "talking stick" when camping, reach tool, etc...
The bumps along the shaft provide great grip for multiple holding options.
CONS:
I would not recommend for elderly due to smoothness of the top handle.
Needs a rubber tip for the bottom, $3 at CVS or Walgreens. Without the rubber tip it will slip on tile and concrete.
Product Review: Great Walking Stick Summary: 5 Stars
I had concerns that this stick might look too plastic, but actually you have to get really close to it to identify it as a replica. It looks very much like my authentic Blackthorn stick from all but a very close distance.
This is a very sturdy walking stick. I am 6'2" and 275 lbs. and this stick is plenty sturdy enough for me. It draws a lot of looks. I feel confident that it could be used as an efffective club should the need arise.
