Product Reviews of Clif Shot Dietary Supplement, Recovery Protein Enhanced Drink, 2.13-Pound TubProduct Review: Best Recovery Drink for Runners Summary: 5 Stars
I started training for my first marathon in January and after every long run my legs would be shot the next day. I stumbled upon this after looking for a recovery drink. I wanted something that was more natural instead of a 100% processed supplement. After a long run, I take 3 scoops (I'm only 160 lbs but after 17+ miles you really need the extra scoop) and mix it in my 32+oz water bottle. I haven't been sore after a long run since taking this! Best recovery drink out there!
Product Review: Comparison to P90X Summary: 2 Stars
Like several other reviewers, I was looking for an alternative to the P90X recovery drink. I happen to love Clif Builder's Bars (organic protein bars), and figured this would be another great product comparable to P90X. WRONG!
Serving size is based on your body weight - which makes sense. However, requiring 2 scoops for my weight, this container did not last me as long as the P90X supply. I was actually paying MORE money for the Clif's drink.
More disappointing was the flavor though. The P90X recovery drink tastes like dessert. But Clif's recovery shot tastes like the desert. It's loaded with salt. In equal servings, Clif's has 540mg sodium, vs. 150mg for P90X. (See more nutritional comparisons below.) I had to add more water just to tone it down and make it palatable. Not exactly refreshing after a workout.
Overall, Clif's is mediocre. I'll finish this tub, but will definitely be going back to P90X. I see no advantage to using the Clif's drink, whether it's for taste, price, or nutritional value.
Nutrient Comparisons:
Serving size:
Clif's = 2 scoops (80g total), 280 calories
P90X = 2 scoops (60g total), 220 calories
Clif's has more potassium (260mg vs. 147mg), more Vitamin B6 (100% daily value vs. 30%), no cholesterol (0mg vs. 30mg), and no fat (0g vs. 2g), but also more sugar (46g vs. 36g). It also has green tea and valine (no amounts listed) - P90X does not.
P90X is higher in Vitamin A (60% vs. 20%), Vitamin C (750% vs. 400%), Vitamin E (500% vs. 50%), B12 (30% vs. none), plus 3 other B Vitamins (Thiamine, Riboflavin, and Niacin) - all of which Clif's does not have. P90X also provides 500mg of creatine.
Both formulas are equal in protein (10g), magnesium (60%), and have L-Glutamine and L-Arginine.
Product Review: French Vanilla flavor is excellent! Summary: 5 Stars
The French Vanilla flavor option is my personal favorite. It has a distinct vanilla taste, is very mild and mixes easily with water for use after runs, rides, workouts, etc. I don't find it to have the 'chemical' taste that is often present in other vanilla-flavored endurance or recovery drinks/gels/supplements.
Product Review: Pretty Darn Good Summary: 5 Stars
I was looking for an alternative to the P90X branded Recovery Drank and read a variety of reviews online. I'm quite familiar with Clif products and have found them to be of high quality in my prior purchases. I had no prior experience with any recovery drink and had only mixed L-Glutamine powder in water (with decent results). I was simply looking for something with a bit more nutrients - and when I found Clif's product (that's predominantly ORGANIC - not 100%, mind you)...I thought I'd give it a "shot".
Let me first say that the product is incredibly tasty. I've only worked with the mango/orange...but found that one scoop in cold water within 60 minutes of a work out not only is satisfying...it does, in fact, make me feel better. By adding a banana, it's downright sinful - and the extra potassium is more than enough (at least for me) to serve as a meal replacement (or mid-morning snack).
I've not yet mixed it with almond or rice milk, nor have I tried the other french vanilla flavor. To date, however, both my wife and I are extremely satisfied with the results and can recommend it highly if you're considering a Protein Enhanced Drink.
