Product Reviews of Clif Bar Energy Bars, Chocolate Brownie, 2.4-Ounce Bars 12 Count Box ( Pack of 2 )

Product Review: Some Clif bars are good, some bad...these are average.
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought a bunch of these bars based on my liking of the chocolate chip flavor. Yes, Clif bars aren't exactly good for you (44g carbs, 20g sugar!), and yes, they're small for the price, but somehow I got addicted to them. I bought a bunch of these in bulk (with free shipping!). Well, after this set, I might switch to Powerbar Triple Threat bars (a good alternative) instead.

I'll admit that this flavor does have a thick, dark chocolate flavor, and will remind you of the richness of oven-baked brownies. In a way, it's too much though...as a post-workout snack they're not too bad, but if you eat more than 2-3 a week you'll likely get sick of them. They're just too dense and leave a strange aftertaste in your mouth.

If you like Clif bars, try the Oatmeal Raisin Walnut or Cherry Almond flavors instead. They're not much better for you, but at least they're more in the "healthy lifestyle" mindset. This is more like a candy bar.

Product Review: Disappointed

Clif recalled the product that I ordered due to risk of death. They were hard to deal with regarding a refund and I am still waiting for it. Therefore I do not recommend their products.

Product Review: Simply the best-tasting, healthiest, and most DIGESTIBLE...
Summary: 5 Stars

...energy bar on the market! I am impressed with all of ClifBar's products, especially this one, the Builder's Bar, and their Energy Gels.

The Energy Bars don't have as much protein as the Builder's Bar, and the protein is derived from soy rather than whey---and some people believe whey to be the much better quality protein. Personally I haven't seen any convincing data on that. Me, I use these bars more as a carb replacement right after a hard workout or run, since I get the replacement protein from drinking about 12oz of chocolate whole milk.

Where these CB Energy bars really stand out though, is when used as a pre-run or pre-workout meal. I have eaten one of these and then ran about an hour later, with no ill effects like gassiness or cramping---which goes to show how easily and quickly digestible this bar is, compared to other energy bars on the market (Powerbars are some of the worst, in my experience) which take a lot longer to get through your system because they are full of highly processed ingredients.

* ADDED 3/01/09: Wow, these bars are actually good to eat DURING a run, too...at around 250 calories, you are getting roughly the caloric equivalent of 2.5 gels plus they contain a little protein, which most gels DON'T have at all. I brought one of these along for a 17 mile, 2.5 hour run yesterday, ate 1/3 of it every 5 miles, had plenty of energy and zero stomach issues. Really goes to show just how easily digestible they are, and used like this, they are a very economical alternative to gels, plus less packaging goes into the local landfill!
