Product Reviews of Claritin 24 Hour Allergy, 30-TabletsProduct Review: Claritin is a great Medication for Allergies Summary: 5 Stars
Claritin (Loratidine) is a medication in the class of anti-histamines. Histamine is a chemical in our cells that is released during an allergy attack. Histamine causes all the symptoms of allergies: sneezing, nasal congestion, itching, hives, etc. Being an anti-histamine, Claritin blocks the action of histamine in the body.
Claritin replaced Benadryl (Diphenhydramine) as the #1 doctor prescribed allergy medication, the reason being that Claritin does not have any drowsiness as a side-effect like Benadryl has. Benadryl has very significant sleepiness as a side-effect, and this limited its use in people who needed to operate cars, machinery, or needed to have full-attention in their jobs. The sleepiness of Benadryl was so marked, that manufacturers marketed it as a sleeping aid! (Diphenhydramine is the component in Tylenol PM or Excedrine PM, it is also in all the sleeping pill formulations). Fortunately for allergy sufferers, Claritin has no sleepiness as a side-effect, in fact, Claritin has virtually NO side effects, which makes it an excellent medication to take if you are taking other medications as well. Plus, Claritin WORKS to counter allergy symptoms. I developed a form of full-body hives that persisted for over a year, and Claritin was a God-send for me. Without Claritin, my life would have been miserable.
Up until a few years ago, Claritin was a prescription medication and was the mainstay for doctors to prescribe for allergies. Once its potential for abuse was determined to be nil, and its safety factor proven, it was released on the market as an over-the-counter allergy medication.
Claritin still is expensive, as the medication is still "owned" by a major drug company. Until its lease expires and it can be marketed as the generic Loratidine, consumers will have to ante up the money if they want the best over-the-counter allergy medication available. If you can't or won't afford Claritin, then the cheaper alternative is Benedryl (Diphenhydramine), and you put up with the drowsiness.
Hope this helps.

Product Review: Does the Job Summary: 5 Stars
I've used Claritin for some time now, and it does the job!
Product Review: Excellent price for this item Summary: 4 Stars
If Claritin works for you, then $18 for 30 of the 24-hour tablets is a very good buy. That's 60 cents a tablet. I couldn't find it for less than that considering no tax, no shipping (if order is over $25), and delivered to my door.
Product Review: Good product - stupid price Summary: 2 Stars
Claratin works very well for me but since they made it over-the-counter, they haven't done much to reduce the price to reasonable levels. They're still relaying on the brand name to generate big profits which opens the door for generics --- and the door is wide open.
Try Sam's Club Loratadine. It's the same stuff and works just as well. The difference is price. The cost on Amazon for Claratin is $0.61 per table. At a retail store, you will pay about $1.00 per tablet. The Sam's Club generic is $12.48 for 360 tablets! That's $0.035 per tablet. If you take 2 tablets per day, like me, for congestion, that is a savings of $419 per year over Amazon's reduced price.
This is stupid marketing by Schering-Plough. If they had priced it at something reasonable, say $0.10 per tablet, they wouldn't lose market share to generics. Greedy and stupid always loses. People are smarter than they think, right?
Product Review: Great Product But Predatory Prices Summary: 1 Stars
Loratadine is the most effective allegy treatment for most adults, with the fewest side effects, if it is taken 365 days a year, and not simply when you feel sick. However, Claritin has predatory pricing that makes taking it 365 days a years cost between $200 and $400, depending on the size box you purchase and the vendor.
In contrast, generic Loratadine is sold at Costco for $12 for 300 tablets in the 24 hour dosage. That means a year's supply costs only about $15. The fact that Claritin charges $15 a month, compared with $15 per year for generic Loratadine indicates a markup of TWELVE TIMES the actual cost.
This sort of criminal activity on the part of drug companies is the reason that health care costs in America are DOUBLE the costs of medical care in Canada, and yet the lifespan of the average American is five years less than the average Canadian. Why aren't drug company execs behind bars?
