Product Review: An Extremely Good Electric Razor

Discussions of shaving preferences sometimes seem like religious warfare, mostly because every face is at least somewhat different from any other face. That means there's really no such thing as a perfect razor.
However, for me, this Braun 8995 is very close to perfect. For many years, I've shaved with a blade-- most recently the Gillette Fusion system-- and I've used a cheap Remington when I travel. Two things happened: The price of the Gillette blades has increased sharply with each new model, and my Remington died. I decided to go with this top-of-the-line Braun.
After using it for a couple of months, I'm very pleased. It is clearly a well-engineered machine that does exactly what it's supposed to do. I've found that my shaves with it are just as close as the shaves I got with the Gillette Fusion. I suspect that as the years go on, the total cost of shaving with the Braun will actually be less than the Fusion would total.
A couple of hints:
First, don't wash your face before you shave with any electric shaver. Washing causes the beard hairs to swell up, and they don't fit well into the tiny slots in the electric razor's head. The razor won't be able to shave you very close when that happens.
Second, the instructions with the Braun say to run the automatic cleaning cycle every day. I can't detect any performance difference between doing that and cleaning it a couple of times per week. In addition, the cleaning cartridge will obviously last a lot longer with less frequent cleanings.
I'm very happy with this razor. It isn't cheap, but it works very well. I'm glad I bought it, and I'd do it again.

This is my third Braun razor in about 15 years.
The Braun 8995 360 is giving me a closer shave than the previous two.
I would recommend this razor to anyone, as I get a clean, close shave every time!
NOTE: I recommend NOT cleaning this razor every day. I have experimented with the interval, and I can't personnaly tell a difference between daily, and twice weekly cleanings. However, I do recommend changing the foil and head unit (usually sold as a 'package') every 6 months.

Great close shave is what you can expect from the 8995 shaver. I had a previous Braun shaver for about 10 years and was a bit slow (hesitant) in purchasing another, but since I had a great experience with my previous Braun, I thought it was time to upgrade to a newer model. Even with a 2-day stubble, the 8995 shaver had no problem. I find that I am not having to go over shaved areas repeatedly to get a close shave - maybe once or twice in an area and that's it. My first electric shaver was a circular head shaver that lasted about three years before it died. My next electric shaver was a Braun corded model, and it lasted through 17 years (!) of daily shaves! In fact it STILL operates as good as the day I bought it, having only replaced the shaver block and foil screen a handful of times. When I decided that I wanted to have the convenience of a rechargeable, there was no mistake which brand I would choose.
I liked the idea of an automatic cleaning system. I was pretty particular about how clean I kept my first Braun. With the cleaning activator of the 8995, the shaver is as clean as new every morning. That I must purchase the solution every few months is of little regard for that level of satisfaciton.
The closeness of the shave can't be beat. It still gives me the closest shave that I have ever received and leaves me with smooth skin after a year of shaves and I am just now going to replace the cutting block and foil screen.
If you currently use a rotary head shaver and are considering a switch to the Braun, you should plan on an adjustment period (a week or so) for your beard to become accustomed to the new shaving pattern of a NON-rotary head shaver.
Very often, I purchase a product for which I have lofty (even unrealistic) expectations. Very rarely are those expectations surpassed. The Braun 8995 has clearly eclipsed the expectations that I had for the product.

This is the fourth Braun shaver I've used, beginning with one bought in Germany 30 years ago, and each has been better than the last.
The shave is closer and quicker than the earlier models, and the self-clean mechanism is a real convenience.
Highly recommended, and the price was the best I found.
