I used to be on 3 month recall for cleaning/checkup at my dentist because my teeth problems were so bad. I have a nasty combination of overly acidic saliva and dry mouth which made my teeth very susceptible to cavities even though I brushed them regularly.
I began using biotene PBF toothpaste and mouthwash around 3 years ago, and it works so well that it has now been over 2 years since I have been to the dentist. The only reason I can see ever going to the dentist again is if one of my crowns comes loose and needs to be reseated or something. The reason I say that is because the enzymes in PBF do a much better job of cleaning your teeth than the dentist can, they can dissolve the biofilm which exists *within* the cavities that dentists tools cannot reach. And if you can keep your teeth clean they will heal themselves, areas with cavities will regrow enamel if kept clean enough. Only the most severe cavities are irreversible (the kind which would require a root canal to fix).
The problem is that normally it is very difficult to keep cavitated areas free of bacteria because the definition of a cavity is an area where bacteria have eaten away at the enamel leaving it porous and soft, almost like a sponge. Thus even if you manage to remove exising bacteria, which is normally very difficult, it is extremely easy for new bacteria to come in and take their place. And the normal 'self healing' aspect of your teeth is inhibited by the presence of bacterial biofilm. Thats why dentists take the brute force approach of drilling out the entire cavitated area and replacing it with a filling so bacteria cannot easily recolonize within the tooth. A much better solution, is to allow the enzymes in biotene PBF to dissolve the biofilm and then allow your teeth to repair themselves.
The key to using biotene PBF is that the enzymes take time to work, if you use it according to the instructions on the bottle, rinsing for one minute, then you will get very little effect. The best way to use it is to brush with PBF toothpaste, then use PBF mouthwash and hold it in your mouth for 30 minutes or more. When you hold it in your mouth for this long, you will be able to tell that it is working because your mouth will start to fill up with air on its own, ie eventually your cheeks will start to puff out like a balloon even if you do not blow any air into them. The reason this happens is because of the way the enzymes work, basically they facilitate a chemical reaction which breaks down the biofilm and in the process releases carbon dioxide and small amounts of hydrogen peroxide. So when you allow them time to work, eventually your mouth will start filling up with CO2 gas from the inside.
Note, however, that the mutanase and dextranase enzymes will only dissolve plaque biofilm. In most cases they will not be able to dissolve preexisting calculus or tartar, those form when you allow plaque to sit on your teeth for a long time and minerals become embedded in the biofilm. Those must be manually removed with a dental explorer (the sharp scraper thing dentists use). This is best done by a dental hygienist since calculus often forms below the gumline.
