Product Reviews of Bayer's Contour Blood Glucose Monitoring SystemProduct Review: Great Blood Sugar Monitor! Summary: 5 Stars
I've used many blood sugar monitors. This has the plus of the strips being less expensive for my company to cover, but I was impressed with how inexpensive the machine was, too. It is a very simple, basic machine. Easy to use, accurate. Couldn't ask for more.
Product Review: Great Meter Summary: 5 Stars
I tested this meter along side my One Touch Ultra Smart - and this one was about 5 points off each time. That's close enough for me (and maybe the other meter was wrong). Short of going the doctor to test, I don't know how you get an absolute accurate reading. I'm very happy with this USB meter. Small and easy to carry. Downloading to Windows 7 worked very easily. 5 stars.
Product Review: Great meter, lots of features, but very easy to use Summary: 5 Stars
I've been diabetic for over 10 years and used a variety of glucometers. This has been the best and easiest to use right out of the box. It requires a pindrop sample and gives an accurate result in only 5 seconds.
The display is quite large for those with eyesight difficulties. It comes with a carrying case to hold the meter, a lancet, and a vial of test strips. You don't even have to take the meter out of the case to use it...just unzip the case and pop in a test strip!
It's easy to track pre-and post-meal readings using the up/down arrow and "M" button to mark each result. It can even be set to remind you to re-test post-meal in 2.5 hours!
The meter can be connected to a PC for downloading data (my doctor does this for me to analyze my readings).
It only comes with a few test strips (this is how all glucometers are packaged), so be sure to get extras. If your insurance doens't cover the strips, LOOK AROUND AT AMAZON for boxes of strips. They can be found for almost 50% of the cost at your local Wal-Mart.
Product Review: IS ACCURACY IMPORTANT? READ MY EXPERIENCE Summary: 3 Stars
The Ascensia(tm) Contour Blood Glucose Monitoring system has proven not as accurate as I would have expected. The unit came with 10 FREE Strips and I purchased an additional 100 strips. The first thing I did was the chemical strip test to determine its stability - I used 3 Strips and the output was within a few numbers . After getting out the Lancet I decided to test myself. My First reading was 91 (very good). I then proceeded to test another finger (just out of curiosity); and the reading was 110 (OH DEAR).. I proceeded to poke and bleed myself an additional 10 times and the readings went from 85 to 125... THE AVERAGE READING BEING 93 (which I assume is my true reading). I spoke with my doctor, he told me this is a known issue with the Ascensia(tm); The method used to draw blood is very critical. You cannot "MILK" your finger, this causes additional platelets to form screwing up the readings. Especially if you wait over 5 seconds before donating the sample to the STRIP.
Product Review: It's ok Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this because Bayer used 1 type of test strips for all their meters. Prior to this I used a FreeStyle Lite meter. I got tired of trying to find the "lite" test strips. Seems they have a different test strip for each model of their meters.
As for the bayer meter,
1. it's a little bigger but that's no big deal.
2. The test strips are a tighter fit to get into the meter.
3. The strips themselves work well. You can actually watch it suck the blood drop in very quickly.
The problems I found...
If the blood drop isn't big enough and the strip doesn't suck it all the way up the strip, it errors and waste the test strip.
It seems to be accurate but not precise. That is, when I compared testing against my FreeStyle, 80% of the time the readings pretty much agreed - within a few points. When it was off - it was off. For Example, I could reading 117 on the FreeStyle, but the Bayer might read 132. I could then re-run the test and it would then show 120. So, I would conclude that was the Bayer meter in error and not the FreeStyle.
It's quick on the read and the test strips draw up the blood drop better then the FreeStyle lite strips. I haven't decided if I will switch to it yet. The other reason I'm considering the Bayer meter is because they are going to introduce a new meter that plugs into a usb port and is Mac computer compatible and it will use the same strips.
