Advil PM (200 mg) is a good over the counter analgesic (pain reliever) that works on mild to moderate pain. The addition of diphenhydramine (38 mg) causes drowsiness and helps promote sleep. (Diphenhydramine is the same as Benadryl, an anti-histamine)
Please note that "ibuprofen" is the generic name of Advil, and is the active ingredient.
Advil comes in 200 milligam tablets or capsules. For most mild aches, it can be quite effective. Not only does Ibuprofen relieve pain, but it also is an excellent anti-inflammatory medication (it lessens swelling). Thus it is also good for arthritis pain, any joint or muscle sprains or strains, and works well for toothache pain too. Ibuprofen reduces fever as well, (better than Tylenol).
The recommended dose is 1 tablet (200 mg) every 4 hours. Don't take two tablets, as you will get too much diphenhydramine (the sleeping antihistamine).
Ibuprofen can cause stomach upset and mild stomach bleeding, therefore, always take it with a large cup of water and to minimize gastric upset, eat something with it, like some yogurt, some applesauce, a piece of toast, etc. The extra food will help protect your gut.
Like any medication, Advil PM should not be taken day after day for an extended period of time without a doctor's supervision. Diphenhydramine may cause a temporary disruption in the flow of urine, especially in males. It may also leave a "hang-over" effect the following day (tiredness).
