Product Review: All There in an Easy to Carry Size.

I bought myself one of these and was pleasantly surprised for the first time since I started buying and looking at these sorts of kits. I had just decided I was going to give up and simply build my own and I found this one...
It has what you need for starting a fire, or two. It has signaling items for rescue. There are items for finding and procuring the food you will need to keep yourself alive while you wait for resource. There is even a little compass and some minor first aid items plus the package fits into a shirt or back jean's pocket. This makes it far more likely to be the kit you'll have with you when your hunting, camping or hiking trip takes a turn for the unexpected.
The kit is not all you will need though, everyone should be carrying a good knife when they head out into the wilderness. I also agree it is a good idea to throw one of those mylar emergency blankets and/or a rain poncho into the mix. You should also take your brain and before you go, get yourself familiar with what to do in case things go wrong. Being a little better prepared can go a long way towards getting yourself out of a bad situation. This kit, a good knife and some good sense could make all the difference between being rescued and...

This kit creates a perfect base for a small survival kit. It already has most everything you would need- especially if you have a first-aid kit in a separate pack- then this will cover most of your needs. I originally gave the product three stars b/c of the faulty compass. After trying the other items, I would give the package four stars.
Compass doesn't seem to work. When I turn the entire kit in different directions, the compass needle either doesn't move or it points in the wrong direction. I may ask the company to replace it.
The firestarter generates a substantial spark. Other reviews of the firestarter claim it takes a many attempts to generate a spark; my unit generated a spark immediately. I like the one-handed design. I can hold tinder in a high-wind situation with one hand, and generate a spark with my other hand. Also, if one hand is bruised, the tool only requires one hand.
It is easy to put the contents back into the sturdy bag.
The directions provide clear advice.
The white cord is supposedly for fishing. I'm surprised the unit does not include some fishing line. I guess fish are not bothered by a white cord if there's a worm on the hook.

There is nothing more you could add to this survival kit to make it better. Everything you could possibly need if you were ever stranded or in an emergency situation is in this pouch. Lightweight, waterproof, and the perfect pocket size.
