Product Reviews of ADAPT-A-LAP---a Portable BookholderProduct Review: I love this thing! Summary: 5 Stars
This book-holder is the greatest for reading supine on the couch or in bed. When it's cold you can keep your arms under the blankets! The telescoping 3-piece balancing leg is quite flexible; the whole design is pretty clever. You put the flaps of the open book cover under stretchy bands that extend vertically on each side of the holder, and you slip the pages under skinny, nylon fishing-line-type cords that somehow are adequate for any number of pages. There are even horizontal "shelves" on the holder on which you set the book at the height you want. This is perfect for big readers. (I'm so glad I got this for myself.)
Product Review: It works! Summary: 4 Stars
It takes a litte getting use to but it works as it should very comfortably. Its also very easy to transport and you quickly become dependant on it so you don't loose your place in a book just because you step away for a sec.
Product Review: Might be terrific - but just not for me Summary: 3 Stars
I purchased 2 Adapt-A-Laps about 4 years ago, and used it maybe 3 times.
The testimonials of its value seem genuine, but I never got the point of it. A laptop, you can just put in your lap, and the monitor angle can be adjusted; that seems convenient enough.
As for books, maybe I was just spoiled from the Levo BookHolder. The Adapt-A-Lap just doesn't seem to offer much benefit, at least for me.
One of the main problems is that there are 3 protruding 'shelves' on the AAL, to accommodate a magazine, small book or larger book. But the top and middle shelf get in the way of the bottom shelf. If you place a larger book on the bottom shelf, the book doesn't lean comfortably against the main surface of the AAL. It would make more sense for the shelves to be foldable, somehow.
Before you purchase, take a look at it from different angles, read the testimonials. Perhaps you can find a good use for it. Others have.
Regarding customer service - good people. After the purchase, Adapt-A-Lap customer service kindly asked (in an email) if I could write a review of the product. I told them that I'd prefer not to review, couldn't really offer any positive feedback, but that I had no intention of trying to get a refund. They responded that it's no problem, that their customers shouldn't have to be stuck with a product they don't want, to feel free to return it for a full refund, and thanks for trying it out.
4 years later, I never attempted to return the product, and still have it. But the manufacturer's polite attitude left a positive impression.
Product Review: Not really worth the money Summary: 2 Stars
It's okay, but not worth the price. It tends to slip and slide on floor or carpet. Not very stable.
Product Review: Thank you for inventing the Adaptalap! Summary: 5 Stars
Thank you so much for creating the Adaptalap! I have a 3-year old daughter who is visually impaired. With the Adaptalap she can look at books, draw, use a magnet board and a felt board, look in a mirror, and I'm sure do many things we haven't discovered yet, all without the terrible neck and back strain she used to experience when bending low over a table or her lap. It's simple to use and efficient, and it works from the floor, at a chair and table, in bed, and in the car. I am so thankful that Julie Smith. our vision therapist, told us about your product. Thank you again.
