WHAT IS THIS STUFF?

As 5-HTP goes, this is good stuff and reasonably priced. It does seem to cause vivid dreams and it seems to have the effects it is supposed to. However, it should be noted that although you need take only 1 capsule [200 mg 5-htp] for insomnia, the short half life of 5-HTP from "GRIFFONIA SEEDS" necessitates rather frequent dosing for depression and appetite suppression, usually 4x per day and attention needs to be paid to the timing of doses with other amino acids especially since this blend contains 250 mg. of L-Tyrosine in each capsule. Serotonin syndrome may also be an issue for some so this is something that requires professional medical oversight.
Whereas many important issues are not certain or resolved regarding 5-HTP dosage and usage, it does seem to do a lot of good when used appropriately. Naturally a lot more can be said and books have been written on 5-HTP. It is a product that must be used with considerable care and professional medical monitoring is advisable due to the serious conditions it is used for and its effects on human brain chemistry. [Depression, Obesity, Insomnia] Nevertheless after taking it for 3 years I can say that I have experienced no negative side effects. Also, I have noticed reduced cravings for sweets, less anxiety in social situations and have slept better than I ever have. There has also been no sign of 5-HTP being habit forming in my experience.
5-HTP WITH L-TYROSINE?
If you are considering using this product for anxiety or sociophobic disorders [NOW] currently offers a 200mg dosage combined with the amino acid L-tyrosine + several B vitamins. Many have found the addition of 250 mg of L-tyrosine to be most helpful and the product still retains all of its other characteristics. This variation also contains 10 mg. of niacin and 3 mg. of Vitamin B6 per capsule. The addition of L-tyrosine is supposed to be helpful to those suffering from anxiety and sociophobic symptoms in addition to the usual things that 5-HTP by itself is supposed to be good for.
PLEASE NOTE: The dosage of this product [200 mg. 5-HTP + 250 mg. L-tyrosine] is the largest offered and is usually utilized by those who have taken 5-HTP for some time and are under a doctor's supervision for the ailments that this product addresses. For applications such as appetite control [which requires the largest dosage] dosages from 300-600 mg. were used in double-blind clinical trials, making 200 mg. doses of 5-HTP an almost practical, though still quite expensive alternative to reaching the higher doses required.
ABOUT BRANDS with this SPECIAL BLEND FORMULA:
This blend of 200 mg. 5-HTP and 250 mg. L-tyrosine + B6 & B3 are rarely offered, but are quite potent. Only several brands offer this blend and of them I have experience only with this "NOW" product which has been very satisfactory.
ABOUT BRANDS OF 5-HTP in GENERAL:
As usual I am partial toward the same three; "Nature's Way", "Now" and "Swanson". This particular variety from Swanson is often sold as "BUY 1 GET 1 FREE" during their frequent promotions, as well as the 100 mg. dosage as well. The "Now" brand offers a variation with 250 mg. of the amino acid L-tyrosine added to each 200 mg. of 5-HTP along with 10 mg. of niacin and 3 mg. of B6. That is my personal favorite blend of 5-HTP, but I can replicate that by separately dosing myself with the other components. However, there has to be a sufficient price incentative to do that which there usually isn't.

Combining could be good for some, not so for others. It depends on how 5-HTP is triggered when the individual takes it.
SHORT VERSION: In a nut shell, 5-HTP can trigger serotonin or melatonin meaning alertness or sleepiness. You need to know a lot about this product before you take it. Serotonin and melatonin are hormones in our bodies--everyone's body, the first makes you awake and the second makes you sleep. Serotonin is triggered by sunlight and melatonin by the night time/darkness. However some people can have deficiencies anyway. It will be triggered differently in everyone--dosage is different for everyone too.

I don't think people know that Serotonin is what we need during the day, its naturally enhanced/produced by the sun (its very important to be outside or open your blinds during the day). For some people its good to take HTP in the morning because it gives you a nice boost all day while having a mood-relaxing affect as well.
Melatonin is what our bodies start to naturally produce when its dark and make us sleep. These two things are a hormone that is found in *everyone*, just some people have a deficiency. For example, chronic headaches could be a sign of low melatonin and obviously insomnia is too. It may help to ask your doctor to help you decide and find out which is low etc. Everyone's dosage will be different, if you have side effects then it may be you just need a lower dose--your body is trying to get rid of what it doesn't need.
Of course, everyone reacts different to certain things but that's the general idea^. Perhaps htp triggers some people's melatonin? There are different Serotonin boosters, you can eventually find one for sleep or energy. (cool tip: Chocolate can enhance serotonin which is why it can make you feel good--which is probably why you crave it when your sad! Besides taste that is. Lol.) Anyway: "5-HTP is the precursor to serotonin and a trigger for melatonin" It all depends on who you are and how much you need and how it will be triggered when you take it. You have to really test this product in several ways before you know what's best. If you just want to sleep, I suggest Valerian root and Melatonin--can't go wrong there. There's several other natural sleep aids you can look up.
I find Serotonin to be a good enhancement to my overall life, anyone should buy this product but be open to trial and error and eventual success. You will either sleep great OR have a non-jittery energy filled day and/or feel happier.
Anyone just google "can htp trigger melatonin or serotonin" and/or other variations and be very familiar with things before you start taking them. Just be careful because drug companies may hate them for example and some people may not know what they are talking about, you have to really put a lot of work into these type of things. It's worth it though, I promise!

Product Review: Too much, too little Summary: 3 Stars
I am new to 5-HTP and L-Tyrosine. I was hoping that this combo might be be good, but alas no. The 5-HTP dosage is too high for daytime use and the L-Tyrosine causes me to wake up after 4 hours of sleep.
I have switched to the 100Mg 5-HTP and the 500Mg L-Tyrosine and am mostly happy with that.
