From everyone who asks about this epilator, I get the following questions:
1. Does it hurt?
2. Does it take a long time?
3. Is it noisy?
4. Does it last a long time?
And the answer to all of them is yes. Why, then, am I so enthusiastic about this little gadget? For starters, the pain factor, which varies tremendously depending on which body parts you want to epilate. If all you want to epilate is your legs, forget about the pain; it's negligible. It hurts a bit to epilate around and behind the knee, the outer thigh, and inner thighs, but this pain decreases with use and is not bad, feels more like a brief burning sensation.
If you want to epilate under the arms or around the bikini area, it hurts more. My first time doing both of these areas, the pain was so bad I needed a mouthguard to chomp down on, but after that first time, the pain was completely bearable. This epilator hurts a lot less than most others I've tried, and the special "pain rollers" do perform one very valuable function: they hold the skin down so the epilator's less likely to grab it instead of the hairs. Most of the pain I experienced epilating sensitive areas was due to the thing grabbing my skin, not the hairs. The hair-grabbing feeling is a bit like a burning feeling, but it goes away rapidly.
It is a bit slower than shaving and a lot slower than waxing. I've always taken a long time to shave because the hair on my legs seems to sprout in all sorts of strange directions, and this affects epilation as well. However, I'd say that if it takes you a while to shave, you'll be fine with the time it takes to epilate. If you're used to waxing, however, it might feel like it's taking forever (count on 15 minutes per leg). But if you factor in driving to the salon and waiting for your appointment, who knows?
Braun epilators are corded and not battery-operated, which some reviewers complain about but I see as an advantage; the faster the epilator moves, the less pain there is and the faster the epilation goes, therefore the slowdown that happens when batteries begin to deteriorate is painful. I rely on the power source to keep the epilator from slowing down and chewing on the hair instead of removing it!
Also, there is quite a bit of noise, I'd say on par with a man's razor, but it's not enough to keep me from watching tv at the same time, and, frankly, I's advocate concentrating pretty hard on your epilating and not on any secondary activities, so the noise really isn't an issue for me.
All-in-all, this epilator is the best thing I ever bought myself, beauty-wise. The smooth feeling, which lasts for about 1-3 weeks (depending on how fast the hair grows, obviously), is well worth any pain, and now that I've been using this epilator for awhile, the hair grows back finer, lighter, and even easier to epilate. Best of all, no more stubble creeping back mere minutes after I've shaved! An epilator is a great alternative to spending big bucks for waxing, and this one is gentle and effective.
