It does help with magnification, but it is fairly limited in what it can do. The angle has to be just right in order for words not to be distorted. I bought it for a friend who needs large print versions of books. It is not as easy to read as a large print book, however.Product Review: Magnifier to my phone list

This is a wonderful to read with. I bought one for my Mother and one for me. She is 84 and has had many eyes surgeries. The magnifiers we used in the past were hard for her to hold or caused distortion. This bar works great, it is very clear and because of the length, you can read the whole line at one time --even a couple of lines! The field of vision is wide enough that she can use it easily on her large print books too. My vision blurrs on reqular print after a few pages and this magnifier makes reading a pleasure again. I love how you just slide it up and down the pages, so easy and no focusing. I enjoying reading in bed and was happy to find out I didn't have to sit up straight to use it.
